Ok then guys and girls,

i have done some research into what to and how to go about doing a swap from an auto engine and gearbox to a manual engine and gearbox, but is it worth the effort ? and also is is going to be any cheeper (with selling the old auto) ?

im currently looking at a £400 auto mayfair which is in decent looking condition and then i will look into a manual 998cc engine with a manual gearbox but am not sure how much i would have to fork out for it, also are there any kits avalible to purchase to bolt the manual engine into the larger subframe ?

Also is it just a case of cutting a new hole in the footwell for the clutch pedal ?

How long do you think this will take me and a friend (possibly) to do this ?

The hole for the clutch pedal should be there. minis were made so all the components can be fitted, if you look at your bulkhead, you have a blanking plate on the opposite side to your master cylinder. This is where the master cylinder would go if Left Hand Drive

Couple of hours to take the auto engine out.
Couple of hours for the modifications to clutch pedal etc etc
Couple of hours to fit the new engine, linkage.

Id say its do able in a weekend if your competant with tools.

depends how much you sold the auto engine for? These normally arent as popular as the manual box.

and a clutch master cylinder.. + pipework
a clutch pedal or pedal box..

with selling the old auto

you will get next to nothing for an old auto 998 :\

also a slave cylinder to match the clutch on your manuel engine *either preverto or verto*

I think you will be able to source alot of bits 2nd hand.
When you decide to do this, post a wanted ad in the wanted section of the forum.

I guess ill only get like £20 then lol , but personally i think it would be cheeper than a decent maunual starting at like £700 , just wondering what other peoples opinions might of been

True , but i dont have much money as im 16 lol , so im going for the cheepest route but am going to try and keep the amount of work resonable

Try to find a good condition mini with a "non running" manual engine.

A manual engine will only take a couple of hours to whip out and replace. But since your only 16, you will have plenty of time to diagnose the fault and get it running.

Blown headgasket - fairly easy repair, alot of people dont seem to bother thinking its too hard or too costly.

You might be able to find a very decent mini if you are prepared to do the work.

Join your local mini club too, might find a local bargin.

Sheffield, mmmmmmm check the northern section. Theres a few people from your area i believe. www.fabmoc.co.uk now have meets in south yorkshire aswell as wakefield.

I bought my current one for £500 - it had no interior, except old brown seats, but....10months mot,6months tax, £300 of work for the MOT, recent respray, original alloys and more......

What with the extra insurance you'll probably have to pay for swapping the engine I doubt it will save you anything, especially with the insurance prices a new driver has to pay now. It's a lot of work for little point really. As above, just buy a manual car.
