If you have a 51 plate mini,the new system still had a regional identifier-the first letter on the plate.

Mine is a 1997 Cooper the last 2 letters are AO
But she's been in Aberdeen about 9 years according to someone who recognised her on a forum, which is still where she is. Don't know where she was registered.

EDIT - Found out that AO = Carlisle Thanks to here

I went a stage further with mine a year or so ago. If you chuck a fiver in the direction of the DVLA with a covering letter they'll send you photocopies of all the changes on the V5 of your car.

I've managed to trace mine from new in London (LN on the reg) in 1970, then it become a company vehicle for a Butchers in Mundesley (Norfolk), then a couple of other locations in Norfolk (coastal locations which is why I had so much welding to do!) until I ended up with it in 2000. The car is still in Norfolk but will be coming down to Essex when it's finished - nearly full circle.

This'll be one of those threads that stands being resurrected every now and then. I'm surprised at how well traveled a lot of these Minis are, the vast majority would have been privately owned.
