I have decided that I do not want a head unit as
A - I dont have the space in the dash for it and cant stand the underdash pod things
B - I only ever listen to the music on my ipod (never listed to radio etc)
C - I dont want things on display

Have mounted an amp in the boot, run a 2x phono to 3.5mm jack plug lead from the 'input' in the amp to the fromt of the car and attached the ipod, and have connected up my 6x9's mounted in a board under the seat...

It works but all I get is bass, really good bass BUT everything else is muffled and drowned out by the bass.

What am I doing wrong?

Is my amp too powerful or do I need a little graphic amp instead...

I do not want a mega sound system - just to be able to listen to OK quality tunes without having to use headphones...

Any ideas peeps??

What have you got the EQ on your ipod set too? You might have it set to Bass Booster on similar :(

Try turning the ipod's EQ off and hearing what difference it makes

EQ on the ipod made not a lot of difference - even when set to bass reducer.......

Is there a setting on the amp to alter the bass? I know my amp has a bass booster switch and a rotary control for the bass. You could try turning all the settings on the amp to low, then gradually turn them up to see what difference it makes.

What amp and 6x9's have you got? And how have you wired them to the amp?

The amp is only an old cheepie I had off a mate - it has adjustable input which i played with but that just turned the volume down.
I have somw JVC 6x9's - dont know much else without removing them to have a look - what info do you need??

Was just going to check the amp to see what adjustments it had :(

Are there seperate connections on the 6x9's for the tweeters? I can't see any other reason the bass would be so stong, unless the tweeters on the 6x9's were damaged. :xxx:

maybe I will try another set of speakers....

These looked OK and worked OK in my last car...

either that or add some 4" tweeters to the speaker board as I mounted them towards the middle to allow for 4"ers if necessary...

I use my ipod running through an alpine adaptor and headunit for controlling it and never had a problem. Maybe the headunit acts as a pre amp for the main amp in the system :xxx: :( :xxx:

another way to do this cheaply is like i have done in my mini pickup , i bought some computer speakers with built in amp and sub for £25 and i run them with an inverter , i can use my portable DVD or an MP3 or even my phone !

This set up cost me virtually nothing.......

I had the amp already (cost me £10 off a mate a while back) and the speakers are from my last mini, I had to buy a 2x phono to 3.5mm jack plug lead, but found one on ebay for a fiver.......

I can run Ipod/MP3/phone(with the right adaptor - which I have)/Portable cd/portable dvd or antyhing that takes a 3.5mm jack plug (anything that uses headphones basically)

What sort of sound do you get from your computer speakers - surely they dont go loud enough (shrek has a very loud engine)...

This is a good idea...I thought about doing exactly the same so there is no head unit to nick. Also I don't listen to radio, and taking CD's out is a pain, so it makes sense.

Personally, I wouldn't want to run amplified (PC) speakers via an inverter...seems silly when you can get 12v car amps that you can run anything through. Also PC speakers are generally not great quality and pick up a lot of interference (even in houses).

My biggest gripe is finding somewhere to mount speakers, and I hate the look of most car speakers, especially modern ones...they seem to mainly be designed for boyed up golfs etc :gimme:

Simple....

Make a board to fit under the rear seats (use mdf or buy one off ebay for £10)

Mount your speakers in it - then cover the whole lot (speakers included) with fabric.....

No fugly speakers - and leven less to be seen as a reason to break in!

Yeah I've seen those, but they looks like they're not held in very securely, and I don't want to drill any holes really. Also it restricts the massive storage capacity under the rear seat :gimme:
