I'm fitting the nitrous kit and i'm looking at control units at the moment... the one i like most has a safety feature to shut the nitrous down if the mixture suddenly becomes too lean to prevent engine damage but it requires a Lambda Sensor to do this... Can i retro fit one in my exhaust manifold? or do i need to change the manifold?? does anyone know of a performance manifold with provision for a lamda sensor??

Any manifold for a '92 on mini will have the hole for a lambda. SPI or MPI.

yer... but.... i have a Maniflow at the moment and would have to rejig the whole exhaust to go back to a standard manifold!!

I dont think the exhaust pipe would be thick enough to tap. If you welded a nut on it though, that would work. Or just buy an LCB for an injection car.

If you are going to do any real tuning yourself then you need an O2.
To actually tune for wide open throttle you will need a wide band O2. These are different from the stock narrowband O2 sensors.

The NB is only accurate at 14.7:1 AFR. This is only good for normal cruise.
At what you need the mixture to drop to 12-12.5:1 for max power.
The WB O2 operates on a 0-5V scale so it can read a wide range of AFR.

As for location...it is best to put it at the end of the junction so you sample all the cylinders.
Now the further away from the engine the cooler the exhaust gets so I run an O2 with a heater.
The WB will have one anyway.

The install is easy. They sell O2 bungs for less then $20/10 quid
Or you can go to my Innocenti thread page 5 in the mini engine forum and see how I installed 2 of them in my collector.
1 for NB O2 and 1 for a WB O2!!
I just installed an A+ MPI motor in it with an SPI manifold and TB. And I am running a GM DIS ignition and a GM ECM.

I am doing my initial tuning with my NB then will install my Innovate WB data logger to tune the what power!!

If you select a single branch you'll only see if that cylinder / pair is running okay, I'd probably place it about a metre from the cylinders, which'd be just after the Y-piece under your car, also means you don't need to remove the manifold, and only the centre pipe and silencer to drill a hole and tap a nut on for the sensor.

Im not planning on doing any tuning myself... i have a rolling road 2 miles away!!!! All i need the lamda for is incase i run lean when on the nitrous......
Bill... are you saying that the lamda will only tell me Rich-Ideal-Lean and not exactly how rich or lean... or ideal?? basically, if the fuel solenoid on the nitrous fogger packed up, the lamda tells the controller that the mix is lean and it shuts the nitrous off..... i suppose i could also fit an AF ratio gauge if the lambda will work with it....

998 dave: my nitrous controller will be in the centre console right next to the gear stick so if i tap into the y piece i should be able to come straight in with the wires??

am i on the right track??

for my car, we cut a sensor off an exhaust off a modern car, then just cut the same shaped section off my manifold, then welded it into the joining piece at the bottom, then found a bolt that fitted to block the hole!

take care to get it at the right angle tho!

next problem is... i don't weld!!!! OK..... what "modern car" should i get this sensor from... i have a few great scrap yards near by.. including a mini one so i could just get an MPI manifold and cut a bit out and get one of my buddys to weld it up in to the join of the y piece.
