my mini has the late type indicators and when i take them off there is a round hole with 3 little notches in it. now my question is will early typr indicators just fit or will i have to modify the hole and the wiring???

No because the three notches are the remains of the original holes which the original type is screwed to, leftover from when the panel press tool was modified. The later type is much more waterproof anyhow. If you want some chrome ones there are chrome cover sleeves available for the later type.
It may be possible to fit the earlier type if you modify the lamp base with holes to the same centres as the late type but I'm not sure if the base plate is even big enough to cover the later mounting holes. If you do this make sure you get the earthing arrangement right, this has been changed a couple of times from being earthed through the panel to a wired earth.
