Its been a while since I looked in to this but hopefully my memory is correct.
The S pack could be added to any Cooper, whether or not is was ordered at the same time that the vehicles were purchased.
I dont think that any of the S's had superfins - just standard rear drums - unless you requested them.
As for oil coolers, there were a couple of pack options available. I think it was the intention for all of them to have it - the different packs related to whether the vehicle already had a cooler. However, I seem to recall being told at the time that I didnt have to have it if I didnt want it.
Other than the head, I dont remeber there being any changes to the engine. But, they did offer a 1400cc conversion - I seem to remember it being in the brochure - which would obvioulsy be very different. I'm sure if you asked them, they would also offer all the engine specs in between too.
There were a huge amount of options you could add so I guess that every car could be unique and may make identification less than straight forward.
In the end I didnt buy one because of the cost. By the time you put the S pack on, the handling pack, nice seats (and the leather Cooper ones were very nice), the nice steering wheel, alloy door furniture, etc it was getting on for very big money. Spending that kind of money at any other garage would get you so much more performance from a mini (or a Golf GTI !!)

Is there an easy way to identify the head?

Mine did'nt come with superfins. The engine as said above is from the original car (unless you ordered the 1400) and the only mod to it was the head.
Identifying the head is not easy in situ. Other than being painted blue, they are beautifully ported though.
