the evil bloody lower arm bushes on my girlfriend's mini REFUSE to shift, this is with blowtorch and all sorts of hammering and stuff and me swearing lots arrrgh. Just wondering if there was a nice tool i could buy to just push them out a lil easier? and i presume one would help putting the new ones in. Can't seem to find any mention of one on any of the parts websites.
Cheers for your help,
jef

If they are truly well stuck, better to have them pressed out by a local engineering firm. The new ones should push (beat) in fairly easy. If the inner surface is badly corroded, get replacement arms.

You can make up your own tool using a big socket and a long bolt.
Find a socket that has an internal diameter bigger than the bush, but not as big as the bottom arm. Then place it flat against the bush with the hexagonal end inwards. Stick a big bolt through the socket and bush, and fit a nice chunky washer and a nut on the other end. Tighten it all up, and the bush will be pushed out of the arm and into the socket.
Difficult to describe this one, but its very simple to do, and i haven't been beaten yet...!!

After you have managed to get the bushes out, you will need to have the new ones reamed in. This gets them the right size to accept the spindle, if you dont the spindle may not fit or it will wear very quickly!! You will need to get an engineering company to do this, unless you have a reamer!!! Its a pain i know but its better to have it done right than to bodge. As for getting the old ones out, leave this for the engineering place to do when they put the new ones in!!
Good luck

If you buy some decent upgraded bushes, they will come in two pieces, shaped like a top hat. These will just slide in from either side. No need to get anything reamed....

Slight bit of confusion above... if you mean the bottom arm bushes (which are rubber) then these will come out with a mallet and a punch.... also make sure that the metal sleve(s) is not still on the pin...

It sounds like the others are talking about radius are bushes.
Jefinabox, are you talking about the front or rear suspension?

I also read that lower arm bushes (being front) are the ones in question. Sometimes they can be stubborn, but nothing that a bit of heat won't sort out!
As Syholl has suggested, you can make a tool as described if needed.
