Right well just realised i haven't started a project thread and seeming as what was going to be a simple clean up and fix, has now turned into a complete project it seems relevant to get a thread going!

Now first of all it was the interior that was sorted as it was, well, C**p. so everything that was grey was changed to black, minus the headliner because i don't want to fart about with that.

New dashboard was ordered and fitted along with new top and bottom dash rails.

Posted Image

Also new doorcards and handle set

Posted Image

A new center console and floor mats were bought, and the carpet was taken out and put in properly

Posted Image

So thats most of the interior sorted minus front seats and harnesses.

So onto the outside, first of all because my mini is pink, when it should be red!!! we decided to have a quick go at painting the scuttle as it had a wacking great hole in and needed repairing, so would be painted anyway. This was our test panel to get the idea of what it would look like in the original red. So a couple spray cans were bought from halfords and off we went

Posted Image

Seeming as this came out ok, we thought we might as well do the whole car, but not with spray cans, so we ordered some paint, thinners and all the other bits and pieces to go with it and were ready to go, when we decided the engine looked a bit tired and dirty, and it would be a shame to spoil a nice new paint job with a manky old engine under the bonnet.

Sooooo.... as easter holidays began we started a new task, remove the engine! The engine was coming out so that;

1. it could be cleaned, painted and fixed

2. we could clean up the engine bay and paint it easier.

at this point in time, the engine has been completely disconnected from the car and is just resting on it's mounts on the subframe waiting for the engine hoist to arrive so we can lift it out.

Posted Image

Posted Image

I also got a few engine bits painted up

Posted Image

Seeming as there is nothing left to do on the engine until the hoist comes, i thought i'd get on with preparing the bonnet for spraying as this was going to be the first bit we spray as it's off the car and is a fairly simple bit.

When we sanded down the original paint it was clear to see someone before and tried to have a go at painting over the original paint as under the vinyl stripes was a completely different red, and they obviously masked up the stipes and painted around them, also they had made a bodge job of the filler at the front so that was sorted too. Also while we were at it, we filled the holes for the badge and smoothed it over.

Posted Image

It was then primered with 4 coats just to even out the colour difference, and on monday it will be knocked down with 800 wet.

So there you have it, that's where ketchup is at the moment, quite a lot for a first post of a project but i've been to lazy to make one before :D

I'll make sure i keep this updated and don't forget but seeming as it's easter weekend now i think i'll be having a rest for a couple days. But of course i'll be going to stoneleigh on sunday, as it's my birthday and there's some bits that will probably catch my eye there ^_^

But as for now, im off to work ;)

After a trip to stoneleigh, and it happening to be my birthday some more parts rolled in today

Posted Image

New harnesses, got a bargain here as they were meant to be £50 each i think, but the woman gave me a pair for £50 as she was on the phone and wasn't concentrating, so got a bargain me thinks. Don't look right with standard seats, but i was excited so had to put them in before i got my new seats

And the front grille was mocked up with the buttons

Got a fair bit done today, seeming as the engine hoist turned up.

First of all it was engine out (obviously). I don't think i'll be using those seatbelts again, apart from when the engine goes back in. :P

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

After that we split the head off to get a look at the bores, pistons and valves and everything is in really good condition.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Next it was on to the clutch and flywheel. got the housing off and then had to go and buy a flywheel puller (£20!!) to get the flywheel off. We're going to replace the clutch while it's out as i think it's a bit knackered and it judders everynow and again. The flywheel came off pretty easily and then the back of the flywheel housing was removed.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

After all that was off the bottom pulley was removed (a ******* of a job) and the timing chain was inspected, and it was in really good nick again, so that can stay in place so we don't have to mess with the timing. Then basically the gearbox and block were split to inspect main bearings and big end bearings. And also check any wear in the gearbox which there was none of.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Now i'm basically waiting for parts to arrive. Head gasket set should be here tomorrow and i need to order a block gasket set. Meanwhile i've started painting up some bits. I gave the head a coat of black earlier and have just done the timing cover. Tomorrow i'll re-coat the head and also paint the main block and other bits that need to be black. Then i need to get some silver paint for the gearbox, flywheel housing and other contrasting bits. Then the fun will begin joining it all back together and putting all the fun bits on.

Got the first of the painting done today - the engine bay. Just did this with rattle cans as it would be too awkward to do with a spray gun. Also painted up the subframe.

I think you'll agree the difference from this...

...to this...

Posted Image

...was worth the effort as it will now frame the freshly painted engine.

why thankyou!

just been reading through your project thread and must say it's brilliant

my dashboard was off ebay funnily enough, a bloke on there was selling plain black ones so i emailed him and asked him if he could do me one with red piping and he was more than happy to, i think the total cost was £90 delivered with all fittings, instructions and the little green indicator thingy's

Posted Image

i'll find you a link to his shop, gimme a sec

Gaz

EDIT: here is his shop

and here's the orginal dash i saw.

If you're interested in one just email him and ask him to do that dash (or indeed any colour dash) with any colour piping you'd like, and any clock/radio arrangement and he'll be happy to do it.

That fresh paint is looking lovely. Good to hear that the engine is still in good nick and that you don't have to go replacing everything!

yeh it's a good sign as funds are low at the mo, so at least i don't need to go splashing out cash on fixing the engine, just giving it a small service while it's out and then it'll be back in. Also got a stage 1 kit sitting here to go with it when it's back in.

So if anyone's after a new standard complete exhaust, PM me, i've got one you can have inc. manifold

Right, time for an update

at present the engine is all back in now, as is all the brake system, clutch system, rad and everything else you'll find under the bonnet minus the carb, which is going on tomorrow. Still left to do is put the new exhaust on, and the carb obv. then fingers crossed we can start it up.

filled it up with fluids yday and no leaks so i guess we remembered where everything went  just waiting on a shiny new rocker cover and coil bracket to arrive from minispares and the engine bay will be complete, so will post pics of the engine when the shinybits come as it will look alot better.

On the interior side we went down to Wilthsire today to pick up some seats.

£110 got me 2 corbeau classics with subframes + headrests in perfect nick, just cleaned em up with some leather/vinyl cleaner and they look as good as new. So really chuffed with them, and they're so comfy, could fall asleep in em.
