Lets stop the government taking more money from the poor classic car owners and sign the petition in the link below. We need 750,000 signatories before the govt will do anything about it. we only have 2950 so far so a long way to go. Please please pass this around, as we could all do with paying less!!!!! A classic car is deemed 'classic' when it is 25 years old, so a few cars from the 80's are now classics too.

cheers

Jason

Personally... I don't want to see the date moved, we'd just end up with even more unroadworthy rusty heaps driving around...

Does that mean a 1982 Ford Grandad is a classic... ???

(yes that's deliberately spelt wrong)

And yes, has done the rounds many times....

ooh... PS... and the correct term is "Historic" vehicle and not classic...

The only possible benefit I can see from changing the current Historic Vehicle status is that it would prevent some of the ringing and V5 selling that goes on all too much!

Its alright saying that but my car is 30 years old this year and is in very good condition and has been well looked after over the years and even had it restored and sprayed last year.

Are you trying to tell me that this shouldn't be classed as a historic car???.
I think that once a car reaches 30 years of age it should be looked at by a DVLA and VOSA offical and they should check it over and if it passes then you should get tax free. This should then be repeated every 3-5 years, what do you think??.

Lets face it - no matter how many people sign that petition, its not like it will change anything. Tony just carries on regardless. Look at his track record. I wouldnt mind if they actually spent the road fund licence on the roads - but judging by the state of the tarmac round here, I think its going in somebodys back pocket.

I agree with that but thats not what that petition is for. Theres probably people on another forum saying the same thing about there 20year old car etc.

Your idea is a great one but thats almost never going to happen now is it.

EDIT - There all trying to make driving a car as expensive as possible to be green and what not so i doubt that there going to start giving all these people (without CATS and what not) fee tax! There all in it for the money nothing else so as MVM says, Where not going to change that! Lets not drive our cars till we this this and this free  . Thats what they want!

The whole scheme was originally devised to allow historic (even vintage) vehicles from the past to remain "on the road" rather than stuck away in museums or peoples private collections....

I'm sure without it, there would now be a lot less of these seen at shows, events or even as every day runners....

but there has to be a point at which the benefit of the 'tax break' is surpassed by the actual need to keep cars on the road.... that potential 200 each year could sway some people to extend the life of vehicles of any nature which are really well over due for the scrapheap...

I'm not being derogatory to those owners of post '72 cars who do cherrish the vehicle, but what are you doing it for... I'm absolutely sure is not to save a potential 110 quid (for a <1400cc vehicle) a year on road tax, but rather a desire to drive the car and be seen in that car...

I think the road tax should be free for cars over 25 years of age, because for it to have lasted that long and to be still passing the annual MOT test, it's got to either have been barely used, meticulously looked after or has been restored.

Plus cars get scrapped for the most minor accidents these days and it causes far more pollution making a new car than it is to run your average classic for a year too.

So it would be nice if the year started rolling again, or will it always be stuck in 1973 like poor Sam Tyler?

I'd rather there be no road tax (VED) on any vehicle. Each vehicle should have to display a badge showing it's current MOT status & another showing details of it's insurance. Then increase the fuel duty by however many p it would be, I suspect between 1-2p would do it. Then the reps that do 60k a year would pay more as they should & if you have a classic/historic that only does 500 miles then you pay very little. Also the toe-rags that don't pay any VED, Insurance or get MOT's would at least be contributing something, which 'should' fund the Police to catch them.

That's a fantastic idea and why aren't you the prime minister Alan?

Trouble is they make us pay for the road tax and put the price of petrol up too, so I don't think they want to give people who drive very little a break.

Well fatty 2 Jags John Prescott wouldn't like that I'm sure. >
