Right, I've bought a very cheap 1600 K series engine and box off eBay and am toying with the idea of making it turbocharged. I understand that this will be a lot of hassle, but I wondered if anyone else knew of any turbo'd 1600 K series engines.

I am a total noob when it comes to both K-series engines and turbocharger systems, but I do understand the mechanics of how they both work.

Just wondered if anyone knew of anyone that had turbocharged a 1600 K series and how they went about it?

Best bet would be to get the turbo/manifolds etc from an MG ZT turbo (1.8 k series) and also use the pistons as well.1800 and 1600 k series both used the same size pistons, 1800 just has a longer stroke - means the 1600 is a bit more free revving.

I think the 1.8 turbo has a habit of cracking liners though.

get some forged pistons and away you got this has been done a few times but i dont think it was a diy job

omega do the pistons, you can get arrow rods and even forged cranks off the shelf,

you are looking at 200+hp

1600 prob better than 1800 for higher rpm

oooo, I didn't know that the bore was the same on the 1.8 as on the 1.6.

Soooo, is there any chance that the 1.8 head has a bigger combustion chamber CC with being a longer stroke? :-

All 16v K' heads are the same (1400,1600,1800), except the early single point ones that had smaller ports, and the VVC head which had bigger ports/valves??

That's as far as I remember anyway, then you had the VHPD one which I think was different again.

Okies, thanks.

I am glad that there are people that know so much more about K series engines than me! :xxx:

I am currently bidding on a Garret T25 unit off a Rover 800 series, am thinking of going down that route. Just need to sort out manifolds and ECU bits and bobs (oh yeah, and pick the engine up) :-

I was looking under the bonnet of a rover 75 the other day and that had a turbo and manifold on a 1800cc K seires engine but they stuck a fair bit forward of the engine , that would make fitting under the front of a mini a bit tricky

T series is a good lump - can get lots of power from it, but it's big and heavy esp when you factor in the size of the box too.

I think a while back somebody was trying to put one in a mini but if I remeber ran into allsorts of problems just getting it to fit inbetween the front wheels whilst still being able to steer etc.

Any details of the manifold (ie pics) because I was thinking of getting one made up to be honest. I'd need to know how far the turbo sits on it and what type of turbo it is for too please???

i think you will have real problems fitting it in a mini even a clubby and you cant use side rad as it wont keep cool

here is the one forsale

the torque curve on the 1.8 k series factory turbo t2 was phenominal!

Well, I guess the thing to do is measure it all up aint it.

To be honest, it's all just because I won a cheap 1600 on eBay and was thinking of how I could mod it. I also have a donor cabriolet shell (well, a Keith's Convertibles type job) that is just sitting doing nowt. I don't have to go down the turbo route as I think it would make things waaaay to complicated!

I have even toyed with the idea of using an MGF rear subby and mounting the engine in ze back (it's gonna be a two seater roadster anyway). But I think I'd rather keep it FWD on a modded Mini front subby. I dunno, was just thinking about all of the options.

The rear engine on an MGF subby would mean that I could have the rad up front, may have enough room to Turbo it that way too, but I dunno, it's all just ideas at the moment. At the end of the day a NA 1600 K series will be enough fun in the front of an open top Mini! :D

I might be heading that way after seeing evos results on the 1.4 Turbo K. 195HP!!!! First ill have some fun with throttle bodies first.. Barrrp!

1.4 is best for turbo use imo. Liners are an issue, 1.6 is slightly thinner. We'll see.

Also, evo's turbo k is a clubby, it fits
