I want to purchase a new cam..but how would I know if its a slot or spider drive thingy?

I believe the simplest way to find out is to remove the oil pump... which means removing the engine and at least partially tearing it down.
If you're buying a new cam, by a slot-drive type and a new oil pump to match. It's false economy to not replace the pump while the engine is out.

Do you mean which drive is better? The spider is more or less obsolete as is the pin drive. Slot drive cams and pumps are currently the most common. There's nothing inherently better or worse about one over the other.
Search recent threads on oil pumps. Dan gave some very good points about buying quality pumps and checking the clearance on lesser new ones prior to putting them in service.

what type of engine do you have in the mini A or A plus?
