Hi, iv recently had a reconditioned gearbox put in my car with a new spi clutch kit and its been running fine for about a month now, however this week, i have noticed a 'Knock' sound when i bring my foot off the clutch pedal .. or when i take the pressure of my accelerator pedal.. i hear a single KNOCK sound. Any ideas what this could be?

Engine steady bushes first thing to check. Get someone to rev the engine and see if the engine moves. Or simply try to rock the engine. Did the garage put new engine/gearbox mounts on when they replaced the clutch?

Im not sure if they did or not, i got all the work done at minisport a month or so back - iv got the receipt so ill check if they have on there. I dont think they did to be honest... iv got a fairly recent 98 mpi so would the bushes need changing?? Ill try the engine rev when i get back from work.

Giles,

If you buy the bits you need for your engine i'll have a look at this and fit them for you.

Let me know

Well those bushes will be nearly 10 years old now! So it would make sense to change them anyway, its not too hard with a carb mini, not sure how hard it is with all the MPi gubbins in the way.

The other option could be the clutch release bearing, although I would be surprised (and shocked at MiniSports work) if it is this.

It could also be the manifold/downpipe striking the bulkhead that's making the noise.

So you should ensure that the downpipe is properly secured to the gearbox via the little bracket on the rear side, otherwise you could end up with a fractured downpipe and blowing manifold.

Perhaps the bolt that secures it has fallen out or was never refitted? I'd get it checked now to be sure.

I have this problem at the moment. Will likely be subframe rubbers worn out.

Hi,

Just went through reading this and I have a similar problem but it knocks more than just once when I take my foot off the accelerator pedal rapidly
and seems to do the same sometimes when rapidly accelerating. Would my problem be similar to CooperTrooper??
