Evening,

I took my block in to local machine shop (yay Allen!) and the machine guy said he wants a cam to make sure it's all straight and true.

So I headed home and today took him a cam with which to check it with.

My words were;

"Here's a cam for you to use and or destroy"

Allen; Ah right cheers.

Me; Just a bog standard one.

Allen; Not with that profile it isn't. Think it one someone's played with.

Me; Shwaa?

After a few mines and he looking at it, he things it may be a cam thats been messed with. The only stamping on it tho are a large number sever on the end were the oil pump clicks on. Cam's got very little wear.

So any ideas what the cam is?

I think Mini Sport ID their cams with a number stamp in the end, might be one of theirs.

best bet is to get the cam profiled and see what it is...

Isn't that timing it to the engine?

you would use the same tools to set the timing yes. but profiling the cam is not 'timing it to the engine'

you also use the tools to measure the profile of the cam to work out what it is, the specs of it, lift on overlap, duration, LCA, etc. this can help in determining the cam timing needed for a build you are doing, or if you have bought one off the shelf you can also check the cam to see how accurate it is - you;d be surprised how inaccurate certain cams are!

Dave

Not at all really to be honest - all you are doing is measuring the profile.
