I did my clutch last night, got it all back together but now the starter just spins freely and bites every now and again. I'm almost certain everything is assembled correctly. What's wrong now!?!?!?

unfortunately it sounds almost certain that you havent got everything assembled correctly. Go and have a quick look in your garage for any spare parts, particularly the key washer

Cheers tom, I'll go have a look now. It's a pre-engaged starter.

check that the gear on the starter isnt sticking into the motor, hopefully it could just be that?

Just checked that and its fine. If it was something missed out, what is it likely to be?

from your decription it sounds like the starter isnt engaging the flywheel, yet it does intermittantly right? Which suggests that that the flywheel (and everything else clutch related) has room to move on the crank. You can assume this as the starter is definately fixed in position to the flywheel housing.

So, that leaves key washer, crank nut loose, primary gear shim thing...

I wouldn't suggest continually trying it as you risk mashing up the starter, flywheel and crank but does it definately sound like what i described above is happening? Else, it could be something else catching the flywheel such as the verto slave adaptor bracket thing bolts that go into the top of the housing. If you mix these up with the starter bolts then that will occur.

I made sure I got the right bolts in, however the battery only has ~10V so I've stuck it on charge and I'm hoping this is the problem. If you whip the lugs out, it seems to turn pretty much continuously.
I'll give it another try in an hour or so and let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Right, it wasn't the battery. I put my foot on the clutch and it started fine. Took my foot off the clutch and it idled fine but as soon as it was revved it stopped, as if something got caught. I think was the thrust bearing that went originally, and the bit you bolt onto the friction plate (the shaft which fits into the metal cup I think) was a bit mullered. Could this be my problem? or something else?
Can't select any gears either.

Just a bit more information if it helps, the clutch works, if you put it in gear and start it then its fine, but bites really close to the floor. However once started, you can't select any gears. And when revved with clutch up it squeals almost. What have I done wrong!?

Check your return stop gap firstly....

....in your penultimate post you mention a mullered shaft, are you referring to the crank nose?

Cheers everyone. All sorted now...The key plate washer was in 180 degrees out. Starts and runs fine! Just got to to put the finishes cosmetic touches to it tomorrow (grill etc).
