hey i think it might be a compression issue but to start my car is a mission, when i turn it over it sounds like the bats dead but its not. ill turn it over for 10 secs then again and the third time it sounds right and starts, by right i mean turns over fast. is it ok??
cheers,
Ian
disconnect the ht lead between the coil and dizzy (with ignition off
mine was sparking just before TDC and causing the engine to fire backwards...

avin a coil change tonight ill try it cheers gav what u mean by retard the coil??
retard the distributor... if the problem is that the spark is happening too soon in the combustion process, you can take off the dizzy cap, loosen the collar thet holds the body in place, and rotate the diz by a couple of degree's (anti clockwise) and that should make the spark happen later on (after the piston has reached top dead centre... that way, ignition within the chamber will take place after tdc and assist the rotation rather than working against it...
You'll know if that is whatthe problem is by simply diconnecting the coil or taking the distrubutor cap off, if the engine spins quickly then your spark was a bit premature.
hope that makes sense.

The problem described above is sometimes called kick-back because the excessively advanced timing causes early combustion and the crank wants to turn the wrong way (backwards). I have a friend in Australia who runs the timing WAY advanced on his Mini to get the maximum power out of it. He placed a toggle switch in series with the power wire going to coil (+). He turns the car over on the starter and when the engine is turning over well, he flips the toggle switch to bring the coil to life. My fried didn't come up with this on his own, it's a method that's been used for quite a while. However, my Ozzie friend is the only Mini owner I know of who's resorted to this "fix".

If it is a distributor timing issue, there's another way to address this.
