I also use Duckhams Q 20/50, as I've been told it's gentler on the gears. Don't know if that's true though...

People, you are aware that 20W50 is not protecting your engine as well in the cold weather as 10W40?
I have to agree with Guess Works, i have never used anything other than 10W40.
Be aware that its not now the viscosity thats killing the engine its the lack of EP addatives. Millers Trans M is specificaly designed for our antiquated pushrod in sump transmission engines that requires these EP addatives. It is however a 20W50, go figure.
For injection engines, follow the manufacturers recommendations. Im not going into that one again.

I personally do not see why fuel injected engines should be any different when it comes to oil...I use Millers Trans M. To be honest any oil designed for the mini can surely only be a good thing. I think paying an extra £10 for the sport is a bit ott tho.

But all most of the mini engines are essentially the same. i mean the non coopers were just the same engine with carbs surely. No tolerance differences...
Of course modern engine designs are different. But sinse the mini used the same designs until close to the end of production one could assume it is best to use the oil it was designed for. I can totally see your point of view, and modern engines are quite incredable when it comes to service intervals, 20k or more and this is due to the modern oil.
lol, ive read these debates before in the past when trying to decide which oil to use. But seeing as everyone was disagreeing i just came to my own conclusions.
I also heard that the only reason that Rover specified 15/40 for the later minis is because they managed to get a hold of lots of it really cheaply. (this sounds like the sort of costs cutting measure they would do) lol, but cheap isnt cheap in the long run, apparantly the time they introduced this was when lots of warrantees for gearboxes started coming up..
Its difficult to see whats true. To me using a mineral oil seems like a step backwards. But you wouldnt run a car on an oil it wasn't designed for...A-series designed for 20/50, fuel injected or not. I change it every 3k anyways. I find that the 20/50 made the gearchange feel alot sweeter, cheap 15/40 and it just crunched. Things might be different on an engine with lower milage but ive done 75k now.

Oil always seems to be an interesting topic.
I asked morspeed about oil, as there building a new engine fore me. Since its a BMW 16v head conversion, i expected it might need different oil properties to that of a normal A series, but they say they fill all there engines with halfors 20w50, and have no problems.
Il use it for running in, but if its the halfords one in the green tin, i seem to remember mention on the tin of seal swellers ect, which are not needed in a brand new engine! i would hae thought they would do more harm than good.
Due to the more modern head on the enigne, i would be much more temped to run the enigne on a good quality 15w40, rather than the very thick 20w50.
There just seem to be soooo many opinions out there, AC dodd said on finity in a recent thread that he did 200k odd on one of his enignes using duckams 20w50 changed every 3k, and you could still see machining marks on the bearings.
