should the stray wire on the right to the coil be connected? its black and white. when the ignition is on the coil gets really hot. i take it this is the problem?

The wire is for the rev counter,and coils do get hot when they are left on
well mine does anyway.

Coil is a big bit of wire (to a degree) in oil. As electricity build up (for the spark) they get hot. Shouldn't get "exsessivly" hot but they will heat up.

the wire in question comes out of the loom around the same place as the other one to the positive. we checked our other mini and this is connected to the earth. i think this is right? just need someone else to confirm this is about right?

No it is not, if you earth the coil negative directly the ignition will not work. It is either the tacho sensing wire or the original dizzy connection (which looks to have been replaced with a plain black wire in your car).
You also seem to have a plain red wire supplying the coil as well as the yellow/white cranking bypass. Something funny is going on there.
Do you have electrical transformers in your home? That turn 240 volts into 6 or so for charging phones for example? Do you expect them to run warm or hot? The coil is a transformer, converting 12v into roughly 30,000 volts. Do you think it might get hot doing that?
