I don't seem to be able to get into 4th gear..
When i am driving along i try change from 3rd to 4th and it graunches to the extent that it won't go into 4th at all.. I have tryed 3rd to forth at many speeds between 40km and 70km and still does this..
When i have the car running but at a standstill i can get into gear..
It only started about 4days ago otherwise it has never really graunched in any gear at all..
I would have thought the synchro but it shouldnt just all of a sudden go should it??
Then my next guess would have been clutch but all the other gears seem fine still..
So none of the othere gears graunch except when going to forth..
PLEASE HELP??

Not wanting to be a bearer of bad news, but when my Mini started having problems going between 3rd and 4th it was the bearing between the 1st and 3rd motion shafts that had broken up. When draining the oil it had lots of bits of the needle rollers from the bearing in it.
At that point it was time for a crash course in gearbox rebuilding.
I'd suggest draining the oil and seeing what's on the sump plug magnet. It'll give some clues as to what is going on.

As 4th gear is provided by the 1st motion shaft then at least all the teeth are on it, other wise you'd have no gears at all..
What I would do is try changing to 4th without using the clutch, but matching engine speed to road speed, if it just slips in, then it's probably something as simple as the baulkring.. but as Clive has stated, if the 3rd motion nose bearing has broken up then that will speed up the termination of the box..
Basically it needs stripping and rebuilding..
Your profile suggests you're not actually local to the UK

Nope not local at all..
Thanks for the help i guess its engine and box out and inspection time..
I do have a spare engine and box in the garage that i know are working at least.. Not sure of the condition but working..
I may just save myself the hassle and slap the other box on..
This isn't too much of a hassle is it as the old box has cv's and the one in at the moment has hardy spicers, can i just do a straight swap over, just keeping the diff from the current one and using the other box??

yes just swap the diff over, but you'll also need the diff end covers as the pot has a different o/d to the Hardy spicers. Also remeber to change the pinion over aswell as they should be kept with the crownwheel.

I had thought that it was a linkage or selector problem as it never seemed to graunch at all then all of a sudden just wouldn't go in..
For the first day it started to happen it wouldn't go in then on the way home it was fine then the next day the same, wouldn't go in then on the way home was fine again.. Then the day after wouldn't go in at all and havn't been able to get in at all since.. So over three days had gone..
I would have thought if it were the gearbox internals i would have noticed it deteriorate over time not just go??

my mate had that problem so put up with driving to and from places with only 3 gears. Then one day (a fair month or two later) he though "ah ill take the engine out and play abuot with it a bit" undid the sumpplug and out came a shed LOAD or metal, and oooh 4th gear! lol
