Hi chaps
Just bought some SMITHS dials off ebay, but the fuel gauage doesn't appear to be working.
ON the original Nippon dials, the PCB (well, printed plastic circuitry!) on the back has every position occupied - whereas the plug has a 2 'blank'.
The SMITHS dials have 1 blank bit.
Basically, should the SMITHs dials simply plug n play - a direct replacement for the Nippons? or is the circuit different to the Nippons?

i have done this before and didn't find a problem, but i was going from an old smiths set up to a nippon set up

depends partly on yr but the normal problem is rev counters

rev counter doesn't appear to be part of the wiring loom....a positive from the ignition to negative at the coil. and this is on an original 1275gt

Have you tried shorting the sender on the side of the fuel tank? With the ignition on the fuel gauge should then read full and if it does then you could have a problem with the float/wire inside the actual fuel tank.
If the gauge still refuses to move then the problem probably lies elsewhere, but most later Nippon Seiki instruments don't have a replaceable voltage stabiliser like what the Smiths instruments were blessed with, because Nippon gauges have the stabiliser electronically built into the gauge.
It might be a long shot, but a failing or knackered wiper motor "park-switch" can also cause a short circuit which affects the gauges, so if you're wipers don't park themselves any more or only do it intermittently, then replace the park-switch.

Well, as it happens, I won 2 auctions for dials
The second set arrived yesterday, and the fuel gauge works - as does everything else.

Nah... I always seem to end up hanging onto stuff!
The new one still only goes up to 1/2 way though, just like the original Nippon ones, so the fuel sender must be squiffy.
