God.. sorry guys but the ball has started to roll in terms of restoring my mini, seeing as i'm sending off for my provisional driving license this week i figured i should start getting it fixed up... so i apologise if my constant questions annoy.. just e-slap me :)

Anyway... I am looking for a new dash for my Mini City E [1986] and i was wondering if there is anything specific i need to look for, like what type of rail etc.. im a very inexperienced when it comes to cars so i do really apologise if this seems like a damn stupid question. Thanks guys...

I bought a dash off retrodash on here which is quality made and fitted really well, can only recommend his product.

You can see a pic of it here! I chose to paint mine myself but I'm sure you'd get a better finish if you let him do it. Depends on your budget and how much you'd like to do yourself.

I also have no ideas about cars and people on here will answer your questions all day, it is great - just ask away and don't worry how stupid it might sound, that has been my policy!

Hi mate,,

Nothing specific to look for really, just make sure your dash comes complete with everything that you need.
Fitting kit
edge trim
air vent extension pipe etc
Does your mini have padded upper and lower dash rails?

Why not have a go at making your own first and then buy one if you don't like it.

Might be cheaper to buy second hand too, there are deals to be had.

Dashboard fit is standard across all minis really only gets more complicated if you do a centre binacle conversion. There's some pretty good dash's on ebay I think. And theres a company called custom consoles who I think do some nice ones. And then theres all the standard places like minispares and mini sport. Depends what style you're looking for really.

Oh the only things that do change are how many clocks you have behind the steering wheel:

either speedo and the temperature/fuel guage or the 3 clock version which also has a rev counter.

The other thibng to decide is if you want a hole for a radio in the centre and if you want any extra holes in the centre for extra guages like ampmeters, oil pressure etc

This is an example of a mini fitted with upper and lower padded dash rails (the red bits above and below the dash)

I'm guessing you do not have these as you have a centre speedo.

i was having trouble too mate.

for a starters the speedo cable didnt reach the length required, getting the angle right at the top shelf is a nightmare.
i have finally got it sorted it just needs a good finish.

two tips for you mate;

1. if you dont want hassle just buy one from minisport, cost you around £80
2. dont rely on templates from the internet, most of them are complete rubbish.

hope this helps anyhow

Thats like mine, i was going to custom make a dash for mine, i got templates and stuff off the net but when i took a closer look on how i would fix a dash on wit a cardboard template the speedo sites further back than the top rail so it wouldnt off fit flush. has anybody get any suggestions which doesnt include changing the speedo or any think drastic as i would prefer to hav a dash rather than a shelf.
