Hi there,

I just posted this question in the FAQ but realised it wasn't the good place to do so...
Here it is : I recently bought a pair of 4pots from a metro. I was planning to put them on my '82 mini (which is supposed to get a D16 honda in a shortwhile) and I heard it could fit under 10ers... is that true? What modifications does it imply? I heard somewhere about redrilling mounting points on the hub, is that the only answer? How tricky could that be?
I know I should also turn down discs, that's ok since I have access to a lathe. Still, do you have to use Metro flanges? if mini flanges can be used, which ones? regular 8,4?

Another thing : is it hard to rebuild metro calipers?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Marc

not easy to do at all, and not very safe to be honest if done badly. you need to turn the discs down to 7.9", use the metro flanges, redrill the mounting holes in the calliper and cut off the excess which leaves em as slots not holes anymore (i had a calliper fall off before on a set i had for a while) then you need to grind the outside of the calliper down which also means the bleed nipple gets snapped off and makes them an absolute  to bleed.

you should have them done professionally really as to do it properly and safely requires some skill and precision. what bud says is basically it but it is better to have the original mount hole plugged and then a new hole re-drilled in the correct place. this then doesnt leave a slot and so helps prevent the caliper from moving. plus if you have the discs turned to 7.5" the the outside of the caliper doesnt need grinding. i have a set that have had this done that were one the car for about 10 years before i brought it and they were good as gold, although they are now in a box in the garage.

Indeed, I scrolled through the first page and didn't find anything useful but then, did ti again and the second one is almost what I wanted to know... Sorry about that...

Cool, I might go that way then. Did you plugged it by welding them? Do you remember the measurements for redrilling or did you it quite randomly when it fitted?

fitting metro 4pots to 10" wheel in my books is an no-no because of the uneven thickness of caliper castings. its too much of gamble to even try it. a cheap and just as good option if you must go to 10's is the mk1/2 poverty spec ford fiesta conversion which is well documented on this forum

Also they simply aren't very good callipers. But then neither are Fiesta callipers really. Custom made Mini alloy 4-pots are expensive but are the best option by far.

If you are going to get the Metro callipers plug welded, it must be done professionally unless you happen to know how to weld cast iron. It isn't easy.

Isn't there a alloy 4 pot set that goes under 10's (sort of)? There's always that option open to you.

The only 10" wheels I'd stick 8.4" 4 pots under would be the spilt rims or wellers (which need a tiny amount grinding off the caliper).

they were on the car when i brought it so i would only be guessing as to what was done. all i know is the hole has been plugged and redrilled. how exactly the did it i would not like to say. like i said before, get a pro to do it. or better still, put up with your existing brakes a bit longer while you save for some alloy 4 pots. they are much better than the metro calipers.
