I completeley agree with silicon scum on every point.... but i don't wave a Bini's.

To own the classic, you know what its like to drive through a puddle and have the car konk out.. you know what it is like to drive to work with only 6" squared of de-misted windscreen, to have windscreen wipers that park wherever they feel like on the windscreen.... that friendly black oil slick on the drive way.

Its only natural that some people will move on from these experiences and prefer a car where all the bits work and you know that you can get from A to B without breaking down.... and lets not mention tin worm!!!!

It can also be daunting as a parent having a new driver son/daugter driving 1950's technology and poor safety against modern, rust free crumple zoned cars with SRS, ABS etc and as we see quite often on here, people's parents don't want their kids driving Mini's. in the 60's and 70's, my gramp and my dad were both firefighters and remember the mini being an absolute Widowmaker... not many people walked away from mini crashes compared to Maxi's, Escorts and other cars of the day.

We are lucky to drive these pieces of history but as they become less and less in numbers, there aren't as many to go around and not all of them can be saved.

Not everyone can own a mini

Alec Issigonis is dead. he cannot design any more cars.

Rover is gone.

BMW paid a 5hit load of money for the mini name and kept Rover going for 6 years longer than it could have managed on its own.

Mark thatcher stripped austin rover of its assets throughout the 80's via BAE and make subsidiary companies which he then sold for huge profits.

Whats done is done.

GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!

I would wave back at the person in the BMW Mini as it shows they have a genuine interest in the classic, also its not very nice to swear back or be ignorant I certainly wouldn't act like that to someone in the street.

I'm not a big fan of the Bini but as modern cars go they are good to drive. It has said before imitation is the highest form of flattery, and you never know that Bini driver may have a proper mini tucked up in the garage.

True and I remember my parents begging me to buy something else over 20 years ago, because I kept having accidents through lack of experience and dodgy drum brakes.

But even though I've had many more accidents and prangs I'm still here 20 years on and here's a link which clearly shows the aftermath of a head on between a Mini and a larger car at around 55-60mph: -

Crashed Cooper link

And there was no fatality but the fire brigade cut the Mini driver out because his ears were bleeding and they thought his spine had broken but it turned out he was okay anyway and then after fully recovering he bought another Mini.

So if Minis were such widow makers during the 1960's & 1970's then you could probably also blame the lack of a seat belt law at the time too?

Hi all while driving home tonight down the A422 from buckingham to Stony if i finish early i sometimes see this great little Red Mini and get a flash and thumbs up, but tonight on way back i was supprised to be flashed by a Silver Bini :P ;D kind of took me by supprise! so didnt flash back

Has this happend to anyone else?!

When driving my Mini I don't wave at Binis because they have now sold 1 million of them so there are just too many to wave at. (Those of us that drove Minis in the 1960s/70s didn't wave at each other for the same reason).
When driving my Bini I don't wave at the rarely seen (at least in south London/Surrey) Minis because they probably would not wave back anyway. I have twice let a nice local Mini out of a side road and not even got a thank you from the young and ignorant driver. Like some have said on here already he does not realise I have a cherished classic Mini at home in my garage!
Bini drivers used to wave at each other but rarely do now, again because they are now as common as the classic Mini once was. Often modded Binis wave at each other as we know the other driver is probably an enthusiast.

You're right, but I can remember being a kiddie (around 1973) and sitting in my cousins white MKII Mini 1000 and seeing another Mini heading our way with the driver waving and flashing and my cousin returned the gesture too.

So it must have happened a fair bit sometimes back then too.
