A regular topic on here - search using dizzy, timing etc.

If you still want to check the Firing order,... here's a pic to help. The numbers indicate which cylinder to connect the Ht lead to (number one being at the radiator end of the car.) moves anti clockwise.
P.S> picture ammended, i made a big booboo!

As Ethel sais, it sounds as if the Timing on the Dizzy is way out causing the Back firing into the carb... do a TMF search for 'carb back firing' etc.. and it should shed some light on the problem.

Sorry, but I think the pic's the wrong way round the rotor arm goes anti clockwise with 2 under 1

the dizzy cap should be pointing roughly at 2'oclock when firing cylinder number one.
(picture now ammended) (oh my god i can't believe what a rookie mistake that was, i'm so sorry.)

car turns over has spark and fuel on plugs, engine sounds like it turns over fast enough but just wont fire, engine bin out to fit new head gearbox clutch and electronic dizzy and coil, think the plugs are on in the right order but it wont start all i get is a back fire through carbs hope some 1 can help...
so it could be either>
head, dizzy or coil, all of these are crucial when set up,
have you got the right kind of coil for your electronic dizzy? sounds like the back firing could be caused by the dizzy firing at the wrong time,...

See this recent thread:
http://www.theminifo...x...1&hl=static
where I discussed static timing. Since your driveshafts are removed, pull your engine over using the fan belt with the plugs removed.
In the earlier thread I discussed how to set the timing by watching when the points open and create a spark. With your electronic ignition this won't work. Instead, make up a 12V test lamp with two wires and a turn signal bulb. Connect your test lamp between the coil (-) terminal and chassis ground. During the static timing procedure as described in the earlier thread, watch for your test lamp to go "on" instead of looking for a spark.
If once you've set the static timing (and put the spark plug wires on in the correct order) things don't improve, further backfiring through the carbs indicates a seriously lean condition and you'll need to make sure your carb(s) are getting gas, that the float valve(s) are set correctly, and that the jet tube/needle are not blocked. Don't forget to check the oil in the carb dashpot either.
