Now that the dash is all in i thought it was about time i addressed the fault occuring........

When the ignition is switched on or if the engine is running, the rpm flashes up 6800 on the numeric dash and l.e.d curve. I remeber you lot talking about the same sort of fault when the original r1 instruments are used. I have no exup motor attatched. Will this be the fault indicated by the recycling 6800 rpm readout?

cheers

sounds like the fault code i had without the exup motor i bought one and connected it into the loom and left it to spin away happily

yeah im to fussy about just leaving the motor on..... might just hide it out the way somewhere? There are units that fool the controller isnt there?

Dean, the exup fault shows itself through the tacho, cycling between 0, medium and high revs. I had the same fault on mine and tried everything but still couldnt cure it. You might be lucky and just plug the motor in though, worth a try. In the end I had to wire my tacho directly to the coils...

Did you tee off the neg side of the coils? ermmm the black/red wire?

I think it should be the the orange or grey wire to either of the coils for a signal or you could wait till my divider circuit is finished. I am getting a signal from the crankshaft sensor. only trouble is you get 8 pulses per rev. I have bought some divide by 'N' chips to divide the signal by 8 giving one good clean pulse per rev.
Sure the red/black is continuous live on your loom.
If you want to use the original tach wire you can fool the ecu with a 7.5ohm resistor on two of the wires that went to the exup.

Koss, is it possible to fool the tacho with a divide by say 1.5 chip for noise testing?

The other thing is, it depends what tacho you are using as the coil pulses are much higher voltage, i think around 500V. Mine can take it but some of the cheaper ones might be broken if you use a high voltage input, worth checking before you connect to the coils...

Good question dale. I am not sure about the rev counter on early engines with the old style coils and plug leads.
It depends what signal comes up the yellow/black wire from your ecu. I know on 2003 and later models it has the same yellow/black wire but that is a digital signal rather than analogue. R1s and certain zxrs have this setup its a bit like CAN bus.
Its a data line and that's why the tacho tango occurs indicating a fault code.
If you use an after market tacho and get the signal from the crank sensor then it would be possible to divide that or multiply.
The crank sensor is the only analogue signal (pick up coil) on the R1 Its about 5v peak to peak.

Forgot to mention a lot of after market clocks have a No of cylinders configuration. May be worth experimenting.

I have the No. of cylinders option on mine (Spa Design) but i couldnt use this because the next available change is 1/2 engine revs which would be very obvious, hence the question whether you could go to 1.5x reduction or similar... cheers

So where are you getting your signal from for the spa? Is it the yellow and black wire from the cdi?
I thought you had R1 clocks in your car. Also what year engine is it?
