Hi can anyone please help, I have just fit a new gearbox and rod selector to my cooper sportspack and I can only get 1st and 3rd gears . The gear stick feels as if it only goes as far back as neutral so I can not select 2nd , 3rd or reversve.

Please tell me the whole engine doesn`t have to come back out

Doubt you'll have to remove the box.

Who built the gearbox, have you had the diff covers off?

Have a look at the rod linkage it could just be fouling.

If it isn't disconnect it anyway and you'll be able to see if you can select a gear with a rod through the roll pin hole and check movement of the gear lever to decide where the fault is.

Probably Rover... MPI's are notorious for gearbox problems...
