If it'll turn well over 180 degrees I can't see it being related to the timing, cam, dizzy or anything else driven off the cam as is will have done a complete revolution - does 2 laps to every one of the crank.
It's still catching with the clutch off?
Try it without the plugs if you haven't already. Otherwise I can only think head gasket or something fouling the clutch in the gear casing.
