Ok well why not cut the masking tape to the lenght of the car, make sure where you have cut the tape is a perfect 90 degree angle. Then line up the end of the tape with the bumper, again making sure it is a perfect 90 degree angle. Line the tape along the car, then when you get to the back of the car check it is all straight using the numberplate and rear bumper as a reference. Check for any bends or creases in the tape, if there is none then it should be straight enough to not be obvious to the naked eye. Thats all I can think up for now.
Or just use a straighty liney machine!

(small print: not that I've ever applied this to painting a car, but it seems to work with floors, walls, ceilings windows etc.........)

How wide is the stripe - I'm guessing too wide for stick on body lines?
How about marking a centre line then measuring the right width off that on stacks of perpendiculars then joining them up with masking tape?

can't you just measure the mini, width wise, at different stages down the car.... then join up the dots? you've then got a thin line exactly half way...
then divide whatever width you want the stripe by 2 and measure either side of the line?
(it makes sense in my head! )
