Say I wanted to paint a perfectly straight stripe down the middle of my mini, is there a known method of doing this? Or is it basically stick masking tape down as straight as possibly by eye?

Hmmm, think I have one of them, but surely it can only be used on a flat surface?

Ok well why not cut the masking tape to the lenght of the car, make sure where you have cut the tape is a perfect 90 degree angle. Then line up the end of the tape with the bumper, again making sure it is a perfect 90 degree angle. Line the tape along the car, then when you get to the back of the car check it is all straight using the numberplate and rear bumper as a reference. Check for any bends or creases in the tape, if there is none then it should be straight enough to not be obvious to the naked eye. Thats all I can think up for now.

Or just use a straighty liney machine! :shifty:

With masking tape, to prevent the "bleeding" (which always happens no matter how careful I am), paint the edge of the tape with the existing colour first. It seals the tape & sticks the edges down a little more. Then paint your stripe with the new colour over the top :shifty: .

(small print: not that I've ever applied this to painting a car, but it seems to work with floors, walls, ceilings windows etc.........)

Surely if it looks straight then it is straight?

How wide is the stripe - I'm guessing too wide for stick on body lines?

How about marking a centre line then measuring the right width off that on stacks of perpendiculars then joining them up with masking tape?

to be honest it's not something I've ever done, I just thought that projecting a straight line may help. I see what you mean about it going across non-flat surfaces though :genius:

Don't have any other ideas! :shifty:

a single straight line down the middle?

can't you just measure the mini, width wise, at different stages down the car.... then join up the dots? you've then got a thin line exactly half way...

then divide whatever width you want the stripe by 2 and measure either side of the line?

:genius:

(it makes sense in my head! :shifty:)
