Hi All

Thought I'd try and get a bit of guidance, seem to be a fair few knowledgable folk on here.

started spraying a mini we are working on, paint we've got is lechler mach 5, BU8 Island Blue

The shop told us to use a 20% mix of thinners.

I've got a 1.2mm nozzle spray gun, and the spec sheet for the paint says 4 atm which is about 58 psi.

I've done all this but I'm struggling to get a wet looking finish, seems to be drying pretty much as it lands, I have experimented with thinner mix and a bit more thinners seems to improve matters..

Any tips would be welcome.

Also when it says 58 psi this is with the trigger pulled, my air pressure is obvioulsy higher without, would this be right, or should it be 58 psi before I pull the trigger.

cheers

A 1.2 nozzle is too small really for mac, you will struggle to get a good finish. Ideally you want a 1.4.

I gather you are using hardeners as well? it should be 2/1 with 10 to 20% thinners.

You should have 20 psi when the trigger is depressed for the best finish, thin out the last coat and put it on at about 30 psi.

Thanks Pete

No shop didn't recommend any harder ?? it seems to go off OK, I think a lot of it is my technique, If I go really slow it does start to look wet and drys pretty quick.

I'll lower the air pressure, sound like I'm at least double what I need to be.

What sort of thinner mix would you say for the final coat...I'm actually at about coat 4 now

Think I may get a 1.4 nozzle gun as well.

Oops. Mac is HS (high solid), which is only meant to be 2 coats! Although I usually do 3, first one just to cover up the primer.

It'll definitely need hardener, its 2 pack which means 2 components, ie the paint, and the hardener. I don't know how much thinner for the final coat, about 5% more? I tend to just do it by feel.

I suggest you let the coats you have already applied go off for a week, and get yourself a 1.4 gun, apply 2 more coats the way I've suggested and you should be alright

I'll have to ask about the hardener .

thanks again

Ah bad timing! you could always take off the paint with thinners... or maybe not.

Looks like the rains stopped play anyway  very damp here today, not ideal spraying weather.

Hopefully next post will be pictures of a shiney mini , either that or a bonfire  :)

I've had it suggested to me, to go over the car with a clear coat, now when the car is wet it does look nice and shiney so is a clear coat likely to give me the shine back, or am I still best trying again with the Mach 5 ??

thanks for all the help
