hum even if it was changed to a flip front round nose and the nukber re-stamped into the shell? or even the area with the numbers on cut off the old shell with pannel and welded onto the new shell? if neatly finished no one would b able to say otherwise surely?

Well, yes that's true. But committing an even bigger crime (by which I mean fraud) to cover up a relatively minor one isn't something I'd advise.

could flip front it, is the interior number welded onto the sill?
