I have just bought a 1998 mini cooper 1.3 mpi. my first car so obviously my first mini. i rarley break speed limits so my mini will never see its top speed but i was wondering what kind of speed it would do. Just out of childish curiosity.

What diff did the MPi have? It was a 2.9 wasn't it?

I think its theorectically geared to about 110mph at redline, so you'd probably see about 105mph on a calm day, maybe 110-115mph with a tail wind.

Last time we had a 998cc top speed thread, alot of people were saying they got 90 out of stage 1 998's. So surely a 98 MPI cooper can go quite a lot faster. I would've though more towards 120mph no?

top speed wont neccesarly different, it just depends on gear calculations and rev limiting

I'd love to know this, because I'm going to be trying for my test in the next few months, then once I've passed I'm going to drive at top speed wasting chavs and racing my m8z lyk init! lol Only joking, I'm gonna value my licence almost as much as my car cause its my little freedom pass hehe

But it would be interesting to know, although I'll probably find my way onto pembrey racing circuit at some point, and I daresay I wont be sticking to 30 then haha

2.76:1 FD ratio but the MPI engine is designed for low down torque and economy instead of RPM. I easily made a ton in my old MPI.... both my 998's too.
my 1380 got 121... on a private road your honour.

With standard tyres, and standard engine/gearbox you'll get about 21.5mph per 1k rpm in 4th gear.

I doubt though, due to the MPi's power and aerodynamics, that you'd get much more than 120mph out of it.

Of course all these top speeds of 998s, 1275s and 1380s that people are posted will be pretty much irrelevant to you.

My Mpi is standard (apart from the wheels: 12" x 5.5"). She happily cruises at 85mph, and I've had her pulling a tonne (Shhhh.....don't tell anybody... :dontgetit: ), but I'm too much of a scaredy-cat to push her any more than that.
>_<

110mph with 2.7diff (standard)

105mph with 3.44diff (and various other bits)

I think I've done around 100mph (only had a 90mph speedo) in my El Gordo (998cc). Was rather ear splitting.

Mini's seem to top around 110-120 due to aerodynamics. Well, with semi stock A-series engines.
