Hi, Does anyone know of anyone who has fitted power steering to a mini. I have rally mini and have broken several steering racks so far. I was looking into fitting a quick rack- Does anyone know how well the quick racks are to use. Although at the same time I know a Couple of escort mk2's have fitted power steering using Corsa steering (EPS) and wondered if anyone could advise me on weather anyone has power steering on a mini? Or if they know of a kit for it? Or if not how the quick racks perform? Sorry to bore anyone but was just wondering. Cheers, Nigel

i think there was mini's with powersteering. Late jap ones. Could nab the bits off there, but do you actually find that the steering is that heavy? even with a quick rack? Put a fibreglass front on n its nothing.

I think there would be a problem finding room for the unit! especially on a later model.

I don't think he wants it because of the lightness its the speed of response power steering gives you as opposed to when you don't have it.

A 'quick' rack does nothing in terms of speeding up how quickly you can turn the wheel, it just lessens the amount of turns needed lock to lock iirc.

I asked the same question a while back on another forum and I'm sure the Corsa conversion was an answer on there :P

I know mate, I was just explaining to williams what a quickrack was just incase he'd got the wrong idea, in the same way that people misunderstand quickshifts! >_<

And like I say I think he's more interested in having power steering because of the speed in which you can turn the wheel as opposed to how heavy the steering is.

Someone who comes along to our local meet has Corsa power steering fitted to his hill climb car to help overcome the LSD he has fitted. he says it works very well and even has a little black box fitted so he can adjust the input the power steering gives

He didn't buy a kit at all just got the parts from scrap yard, not sure whats in the black box of electrics. I do remember him saying that he had to use the bottom end of a mini column with the middle of the corsa column and the top of a mini column so he could still use the mini column switches

by the way all on a standard steering rack

you can get lengthened steering arms from www.minitastic.co.uk, they will make the steering lighter. they weregoing to do a power steering conversion i think, so it may be worth contacting them.

Even if you have power steering, its not going to affect the rack, surely? It only makes it easier to turn the steering - the rack will still have the same forces being put onto it.

ideally you want something like i have on my land rover, a couple of hydraulic rams acting on the steering arms, so its power assisted steering. that way the rams are taking most of the force of impacts instead of the rack. i still have the normal rack fitted as it wont pass an mot with just the hydraulics. it works really well, if you get stuck in a rut and want to break a wheel you just turn the steering wheel to full lock!

No classic mini ( unless on a coachbuild order) was ever built with power steering be it Jap Euro or Brit. You can buy kits from JK, and other suppliers, but the Corsa kit out appears to be both cheep and painless.
