i know when people turbo Honda engines, the belt driven power steering pump gets in th eway of the turbo so people ditch the standard one and fit a Mercedes A class electric pump.

Might be an alternative to use? Also, Saxo's use electric pumps as apposed to belt driven ones.

I've read a few threads on the 16v Mini site about power steering. They use the powered steering column from a Corsa with the normal Mini rack, so this system might not work for you if you're breaking Mini racks.

Quote from a recent MCR thread:-
"At the Ken Wharton memorial Auto-test anniversary event in mid 2007, there were, as usual, many competitors from Eire, running rings round most of the UK mainland drivers. However, most of the Irish Mini competitors had power steering fitted and quick racks. The steering kit was mostly from Vauxhall Corsa-type cars, with the electric power steering motor crammed in, within the cabin, just below and above the parcel shelf. The Irish are known to be brilliant auto-testers, but the addition of power steering and one-turn-lock-to-lock (almost) was the key to their overwhelming success at this event."

Power steering also used to be retro-fitted to Minis when they were adapted for disabled drivers, most were of course also automatics.

For donor info the Mk1 Bini's also use electric pumps as apposed to belt driven ones but the Mk2 Bini now uses fully electric power steering like the Corsa and most other small cars.

You say that you have broken RACKS,

what actually went on them?

I may be workth looking at the rack kits available from titan motorsport, Specialist componets said thy can also suply them too as the have dealings with titan. comes out about 150 quid, and once fitted the rack is rebuildale whils still on the car aparently.

Hi all, i know this is an old thread, but i thought some of you might be interested still. I have fitted an MGF epas column to my mini. It was really easy mechanically to do. I cut the mini column about 8 inches from the bottom and welded it directly to the end of the MGF one, with a sleeve for extra strength. Then i cut the front of the mini pedal box which allowed the motor to sit up behind the dash. I then welded a bracket in the original position so it attached the the dash rail as normal. The beauty was the column switches fitted perfectly around the MGF column. The mini ignition switch also fitted the column with just a small hole needing drilled to secure it with a tiny screw. I bought an MGF steering boss from EBAY and also found a billet alloy boss on EBAY. i got these machined and bolted together. A mountney wheel then attached as normal. The coulings needed a bit of playing with to fit but again not to bad to do. As yet i havent got it operating as i am struggling to get a loom from an MGF. I have been told the loom is separate from the main car with only 5 or 6 wires needing cut to remove it. I have included a link below, scroll down to the bottom and see what you think. Quite a neat fit. The only issues i forsee is the system needs an engine speed signal and road speed signal, as its speed sensitive. Im sure some electronics wizz could easily sort this. If anybody knows how to do this please let me know. I am happy to help anybody with how to do the mechanical side. I also have the wiring diagrams of the system and how to put an over ride switch in it to disable if necessary.

Ryan.

I have the MGTF fitted to my mini pickup. It works very well. I am also running a K series engine so the wiring was v easy most of it was in the engine loom anyway.

Good luck getting the wiring done.

You can just the column on this pic:

Hello all, its been a long time since i posted anything on here, but i have been busy. I have managed to get the epas working and have been running it for nearly a year with no problems. I got the electrical side of it worked out and it works exactly like the mgf it comes from. The assistance is speed sensitive and fades out after about 30mph. The system also cuts out if you are sitting stationary for more than around 30 seconds. As soon as it gets a speed signal it comes back on. I had to put a trigger wheel on the front crank pulley and a sensor to give engine speed to the ecu. I also needed a road speed signal and this was achieved with a pulse generator inbetween the speedo cable and the gearbox. Below is a couple of links to the people who supplied the two items mentioned above. If anyone would like more information on this topic get in touch.

My wife drove the Orange Mini I built with Power steering last week and she loves it. However I am going to have to re locate the module that controlls ithe unit. As this is mounted on the stem of the unit and also has a large looking heatsink at it's base I am sure it is nounted thereto help it get rid of the heat more. So, I am going to mount it with a small cooling fan below the fins to help it keep cool. I think a fan from a Computer will do the trick.
I have done this and it works nicely. <a%20href= <a%20href=Attached File  EPS Small (2).JPG   410.1K   35 downloadsAttached File  EPS Small (4).JPG   357.44K   48 downloadsAttached File  Small Electric Power Steering Mini (8).JPG   346.24K   42 downloadsAttached File  DSC00187.JPG   87.86K   8 downloads

Alot of people fit them to rally cars , especialy the Mk1 and 2 escorts and its bit of a best solution. They work well enough and theres plenty of them about is one was to fail

Interesting read!
It's been a while since I promised my dad to fit power steering to his mini. Maybe I should give it a go now.

If you search YouTube for Mk2mania and classic mini there is information about their power steering conversion for our minis.

I'd like to add power steering to my mini, not really needed but it's a nice little creature comfort to not need to wrestle with the steering wheel.
