IN MY OPINION the charger gasket is possibly not the best to use as the gasket was paper and the new one from BM is a metal one cost only 3.95 maybe should come with the kit & not the paper one????

just saying what i see and not jumping on the band wagon

Has anyone else had one of these kits from johnspeed or know someone that has, just to get a comparison and see what there experiance, fitment and reliability was like? David may have just been unlucky.

I've had experience of fitting the kit to a 1275 and I can confirm that the bottom pulley can be a problem with the n/s engine and radiator mount. The fan required trimming as it hit the pulley, about 5mm was taken off the ends of the blades. The engine I worked on had low comp pistons fitted so the head gasket issue wasn't a problem and as there was no servo fitted there was no issue with the inlet pipe so I cannot comment on the problem seen there.

I would suggest that as part of the kit a new engien mount was supplied with the correct clearance already set along with a replacement fan that wont hit the bottom pulley

Hi Nige
Great idea to supply the bottom bracket with the kit. That has been taken on board and are now looking at options that do not make the kit more expensive. If it makes it easy for the customer then I am for it. The kits are now supplied with a fan spacer so no trimming of the fan is necessary.

I sold two of these kits to two 17 year old lads for two 998 engines without any mechanical experience and they rang us for support all the way through the installation and they are running around fine to my knowledge last time I spoke to them.

The head gasket we use is the metro turbo one and as I have said before I trust the decompression plates totally 150% because I have tested them on metro turbo, 1380 and I run one on my 998 which had done 80,000 miles before it was supercharged and she goes fine. The engine needs to be in good condition to fit one of our kits but it does not matter how old the unit is as long every think is ok and the basic engineering is adhered to when fitting the kit. If the engine already has a fault then fitting a super charger will only make the problem much worse. Obviously if the bottom end is hanging out or the engine already smokes you do not fit a supercharger . I could remove the material from the cylinder head to lower the compression which takes around 5 minutes to do on the cnc and equals the chambers up perfectly but I did not because I know the decompression plates are fine. I would not run around with one myself if I was even the slightest worried and I certainly would not supply them to the public. The decompression plate is only an option we can also machine the head for the customer instead if the customer asks and is prepared to post the head to us. Both options are available for the same price. This can not be done on some cylinder heads because they have already been faced to far to remove the necessary material.

To the people that are sceptical about the decompression plate I ask this question? Have you tried one or are you assuming it will not be ok. Our decompression plates are made from the highest grade stainless possible. As I said before I was very concerned about this idea at first but have no problems with them now as I have seen them running on high performance cars for the last 2 years. We also sell them for the zetec engine for turbos and supercharger with out any problems to my knowlege.

David (Ker781g)
This is my offer to you.
Bring your 998 Head to jonspeed and I will machine the chambers to give you the exact required compression ratio and supply you with the correct head gasket so you can fit the kit. This I will do completely free of charge. I do not like falling out with any customers and if I sell them a kit they have our full support until I am threatened. Then I remove any help. This seems to have been a misunderstanding so I will know help you again if you so wish. I never walk away from a customer until it is impossible to do business with them or they are being compleatly unreasonable

If I have missed something and not replied to a post please feel free to contact me via email and I will answer any concerns or questions.

Thanks Carl @ Jonspeed

From Jonspeed:

Hi Nige

Just to answer a question that I saw on this thread. The Steel gasket between the super charger and manifold that comes from BMW does not fit our kit because of the modifications. I have 20 of these in stock if anyone wants one because I doubt if I will ever use them. The gasket we have made are a lot more expensive than the BMW ones and were tested extensively to make sure they do not blow. I am not a gasket manufacture so I do not know the exact name of the material but it is definitely not paper. It is very similar to the gasket paper used on air compressor head gaskets. I asked for the best material available on the market and fully informed the company that make them for us of the kind of pressure that they were under. The only time the super charger gasket have to my knowledge had a problem is if the head gasket goes or if the mixture and timing is so far out it causes the engine to blow back through the engine. This is the reason why we supply a needle in the kit so the customer can not get it to far out. The steel gaskets go also if this happens. If this does happen we keep plenty of replacement gaskets which we despatch free of charge to our customers. Our support is not just for today but for as long as you have one of our kits.

Thanks Carl @ Jonspeed

is everyone agreed that on balance, nothing from this thread can be used against jonspeed as i get the feeling that people still have come negativity from a decent supplier who has had some misunderstandings with a customer?

I have both spoken to and bought from jonspeed and i have no reason to question their products or customer service and i would consider using them again.

Sam
