did he have a rear diagonal tho? I once saw a guy drive into sainsburys with a kid (about 6) in the back of his car sat with no seatbelt holding on to the rear diagonal of the cage... Disgraceful lack of concern for the kids safety... so i can understand why it could be illegal, but it might only be due to the rear diagonal?

The only reason I can think of is that maybe he had removed the rear seat belts, or at least the copper thought he had. It IS illegal to have a rear seat and no belts.

doesnt it depend on the year of the car? my landrover doesnt have any belts in the back, just side facing bench seats. its a '69 series IIa by the way.

Going back to roll cages.

Not all roll cages are for additonal protection in the event of accident, some are solely for decorative purposes only and are not safety devices - so check before you put one in.

re the back seat and belts -

The law - seat belts and child restraints
The law requires that drivers and passengers aged 14 and over in cars, vans and other commercial vehicles must wear a seatbelt if available. As a driver you are responsible for ensuring that anyone under the age of 14 wears a seat belt or use an appropriate child restraint as required in the regulations

no mention about rollcages

I believe the law about rear seat belts is based on the manufacture year of the vehicle.

As for decorative roll cages. They certainly aren't a safety device as you say. Most, if not all, are made from materials that would most likely deform in a bad accident and pose a serious risk to any passengers, and I consider them to be extremely dangerous.

Safety devices. Thanks for tthe replies by the way to everyone. Must say would be interested to see the illegal proof about back seat passengers. Also whats the thought on using non bucket seats and a cage.

Thanks

My thoughts are that most standard seats leave you sitting quite high up, making it more likely for you to hit your head on either the main roll hoop, or if its a full cage, the bars over the doors. You also don't have any side support with standard seats, meaning your free to move towards the door, again making body and limb contact with the cage more likely.

My recommendations for a proper roll cage would be Safety Devices or Roll Centre.

I thought If you a bucket for the driver's seat you could use a 3 point harness and still keep the backseats :)

Its a bit silly though.. If in a mini you don't have rear seatbelts but have the seats, Put some in!!, In an accident the back passengers leave the seat and hit the seats/people in front.. And most often.. killing them. :)
