Right ive got a problem, its got my head done in so i need a different point of view.

Brothers computer failed - mobo and cpu.

So we got him a new upgrade, with a new cpu and motherboard. Built it up fine. Installed XP Home SP2. All fine.

Installed the wireless network reciever (linksys usb) and put in all the details. The computer wouldnt get IP via DHCP. Few problems later and a reinstall with XP Professional original, it recieves IP VIA DHCP but wont get any internet.

The thing is my computer gets the internet fine, all the settings are the same. The router is set up for PSK TSK which is working fine. Both computers connect to the network, show up under network places etc but his just wont get any internet.

Any ideas?

My settings are... XP HOME SP2 using linksys usb (same as him)

DCHP Active IP table shows
JORDON 192.168.1.64 00:12:17:81:0D:1D 23:35:27
joshua 192.168.1.66 00:12:17:81:10:02 23:35:31

Theres a ARP/RARP Table which shows
192.168.1.64 00:12:17:81:0D:1D

Have you checked to make sure its not the Windows firewall blocking internet traffic for him?

Also look in the router's firewall rules to make sure he's allowed to access the net.

Can you ping each machine? I guess you can as he's been given an IP although this can be blocked via the windows firewall, or any other one that is installed.

Everything looks as it should and my hunch is its a firewall problem of some sort.

should have put both firewalls disabled.

Just ping'd him from my machine. 3 sent, 1 lost.

EDIT: Ping'd a couple of times. Keep getting request timed out. but average 2 or 3 packets get through.

Ok, so not that great a connection I assume. How far away from the router is it?

Is it showing low to no connectivity or high?

Is it possible to try it via a lan cable? Narrow it down to the PC or just the wireless then.

Im guessing more networking based people would be able to help more than me tho, im just going through the steps I would take.

showing 100% on the connectivity. its basically the otherside of the room through a door.

I could connect it by LAN, just would need to move the PC into the other room.

Sudden thought...is it a Nvidia Motherboard? And does it have the nvidia firewall enabled?

I guess you have done that if it is, but I was stupid enough not to once and it took me ages to work it out. :)

His Pc is enabled for DHCP? Should be done by default. So its not forcing the router to give the IP its got...

Thats the only thing I can think of thats left.

You can access the router from this PC can't you? Just to check that you can get to the router, and share files between each PC.

I've had this happen a few times, to various machines over the years. The is a "cludge" of a work-around for win XP that usually heps sort it. To this day I *STILL* don't actually know what causes it, but it's something to do with how XP handles the TCP/IP stack and network associations.

Anyhow, remove all the current WIFI network connetions in "Network Connections" (right click "My Network Places" and select "properties") then reboot back into windows, and reboot again for a 2nd time. This convinces windows it has no network.

Next you need to create a new network connection, in the "Network Connections" window. Click "Setup a home or small office network" from the "network tasks" box on the left. Follow the wizzard through, select the WIFI adapter.

Make sure that both computers have the same "workgroup" name - default is "MS-HOME". enter anything you want for the computer name (I use egyption gods - no reason, just different :) ). Then follow the rest of the wizzard through.

Make sure that windows is NOT controlling the wireless link (windows zero config), and that the software that comes with the WIFI adapter is set to controll it. connet to the wireless network from within the WIFI software. Once connected, test for connection to the router / other PC (although you may need to reboot first - sometimes required) - if nothing , then run the "Setup a home or small office network" wizzard again. (I told you this was a cludge fix!)

Reboot

Try to connect to the other computer (share a drive - whatever). If thats all working, then you should be able to connect to the router setup page, if thats working then you should be able to access the internet now.

I've had to do this a number of times with WIFI cards - helps to setup the inital connection without any security though, and you can change that later.
