Thanks people.

Nightmare! I hope it's Ok Jammy, we lost our PC a few weeks ago.....

I'm soooo glad we bought a surge protector for the new one, we had four power cuts within a two minute gap this morning, but the little UPS is working a treat- phew!! >_<

Good luck sorting it out.....

Hi there

New here but unfortunatly my computer was just plugged into 240 while the switch was on 120. I heard a small bang and then nothing. It smelled kinda funny too. Please help! What happened to my computer. I get no response when I try to power up. I have checked the chord and it is good. Is my mother board dead?

appreciate any help

thanks

if you heard a bang and a little puff of smoke... then something melted or burned.

the yellow wire as loads of people have pointed out is a 12v feed.
and that you found it had slightly scorched the graphics card is nothing to really worry about..

i would be checking the volts and as a precaution getting a new psu anyway...

but id give it a go for a few hours running some games to see if you've cooked your graphics card.
only time ive ever made a pc bang was discovering the switch on the back of the psu 110 - 240v..

and switching it to 110 >_<

all good fun!

Chances are you might be OK, and only the power supply is dead - however a power supply that has gone 'pop' in this manner CAN damage the rest of the computer. I've had everythng in a computer die from a bad PSU, hard drives, RAM, graphics card, motherboard and CPU - all toast! Not one of mine though, happend when I was still working as a computer tech.....was an important server too. >_<

Just replace the PSU with a new one and see if everything starts up as normal, then run a few basic test to make sure everything is working (try running a graphics intensive game, this should quickly let you know if something is failing, as the game will stress the components), chances are fairly good that you will be OK though. :(

Don't be tempted to open the PSU and try to fix it yourself though - they hold a big charge of electricity for quite a while after being unplugged, and there is nothing you can replace yourself - unless your familiar with switch-mode power supplies.
