Bought myself some used wheels recently and being used, the laquer on it is peeling/cracked at certain places. Am keen to refurbish or have it relaquered without damaging the based chrome

Any idea plse?

You will struggle to re-laquer them without painting them again.

Id suggest stripping them to bare metal and just doing them again.

A wire brush attachment on a drill works well, but go steady, they have a mind of their own.

Or you could have them sandblasted, I guess this would be about £30, but takes alot of time out the job.

Then they would just need rubbing smooth again, priming, painting and laquering.

I think theres a FAQ about this, so have a look!

they've been chromed then...

i think you'd be alright just rubbing back the lacquer till you hit the plating..

and then lacquer over again..

:S did i imagine they were chromed?

I was under the impression that it couldnt be chrome because nobody really laquers over chrome...

If they are chrome then I dont know what you could do apart from having them re-chromed but this is mighty expensive and chromers tend to take forever.

I doubt if they are chromed, as Jack says you don't lacquer over chrome. They are probably polished/spun alloy. The only way to remove the lacquer without damaging the finish would be to use nitromors or similar, keep it wet and let it soak for about an hour, then brush it all off with a hard bristle brush, like what valeters use to clean alloy wheels. Another way would be to use very fine wire wool with the nitromors, and then polish it up with a kit like this LINKY
and then get it re lacquered with 2K clearcoat.

:-

The wheels is a 12x5.5 Ultralite and I was wrong; it only has chrome on its outer edges about 1 inch plus and not the whole wheel. Must have seen my wheels in my dreams as fully chromed...lol

Anybody has the same or experience in removing the lacquer plse?

Thanks
