The main reason for that was down to the screen nozzle vents and because they were made of 2 pieces of plastic that were stapled together, they lost a fair bit of the warm air because they'd open up with age. So most of the hot air was being directed behind the dashboard instead of up at the windscreen.

You could tape them and the hose joints up to stop the heat loss, or invest in earlier metal types instead.
