Hello got home to find out that my brother has changed the wireless stuff or reset it

Managed to get on it with his computer through the cable and get a security code
When searching for the network on my computer its only found briefly with excellent signal but next doors is found all the time with poor signal.

Managed to grab it quick while it was visable and enter the code was connected ful signal with limited or no connectivity!

Any help!?!?

Stressed Holly :genius:

It's quite likely to have a wireless security system in use - this is so that you can connect but your neighbours (for example) can't. If you look in your network settings and find the wireless network (I can't be more specific on what these dialogues will look like in your machine or operating system, sorry) then try finding some 'properties' for it, perhaps by right-clicking on it. In there you may have the option to enter a key (possible called a WEP key or something).

Best bet? Call your brother and scream at him :genius:

Sorry Holly, the WEP key was my best guess!

Oh... one thing - yoiu might need to have your pc's unique net address (the 'mac address') added to the router configuration.... need your brother for that, I think! :genius:

I prefer the BOFH approach: Those who can, avoid it - those who CAN'T are IT managers / head of dept

Wireless router are a pain to get going, usually it's just a case of incorrect settings. If the wirless NIC has a program to control it, it's usually better to use that, then use windows to control it - and if it just will not connect.......force windows to control the NIC, then setup a new network connection.

The rest of the time it's usually an authentication problem - incorrect WEP / WPA key, incorrect key number (always set it to use key 1), or windows if having some networking issues and is not controling the NIC correctly.

Think this forum needs a computer help section....even just a sticky, so most common questions and fixes will allready be listed - and a quick search will help find posts that solve the problem. Nice and quick, and no need to hang around until some IT geek turns up here.... :genius:
