Hi people

I have done a search but could not see any think really. I'm having slight problems removing the steering column from the rack. I have followed the way Haynes says to do it. undone the pinch bolt and rack mounts, used a 6mm pin to hold the rack in central position while column is discounted. The thing is i have undone the pinch bolt and column mount and i cant get it to part from the rack. Has any one got any idea's how to get it to part i have tryed pulling it and have sprayed some penetrating oil on it the retryed a hour or two later and still no joy.

Thanks Billy

Hi there you say that you have undone the pinch bolt, you have to take the bolt out for it to part hope this helps J.D.

Try putting a screwdriver in the slot at the bottom of the column and spread it a little

:D >_< Done that as well. wast tempted to get a bolt joint remover or a crow bar and and try and prise it of by wedging it under the column part where the bolt goes thought and the body but i have a feeling i will put a dent in the shell before it moves.

you have to undo also the bolt on the outer column, which attaches it to the frame. its usually a shear bolt

yes thats the one.

when i had to remove mine, i had to open the slot a lot so it came out. not just a small screwdriver. try opening it more and while youre there spray some more penetrating fluid

It is possible if the column is allowed to drop after the pinch bolt has been removed that it can drop furter onto the pinion than the length of the spline inside the column. The spline on the pinion is then within a void at the bottom of the column and effectively out of mesh with the spline inside. The two being out of mesh will stop you sliding it off, try rotating the column each way a little as you pull to re-engage the spline. Once it's back in mesh it should slide easily, if that is actually the problem.
