is there a spacer between the car and the manifold? I can remember having a similar problem in the past and removing/modifying the spacer to make more room.

That air filter is probably reducing your airflow by quite some degree!!!! i's be getting a cone filter on that!!

or just get a proper airbox with a K&N replacement elephant, its what I've been running for about 18months now, it does get dirty, but no where as filthy as the cones do.

ginigwunkle, did you mean your air filter lasted you 2 years or the k&n washing stuff? :(

Also, you know where mine is mounted, that's not the usual way is it? Normally it'd be mounted on top, not at the back. I think the reason why the previous owner put the air filter there is because it wouldn't fit on top. So would a cone filter fit on top??

He's running so poo at the mo, really struggling for power..

Oh, and I have no idea Biggav :P I'll ask Neil if he knows...

Depends how much money you are prepared to spend.. the cone shaped K&N was produced to solve the fitting problem you have - it's not down to your car being poorly repaired, squeezing the filter under the windscreen scuttle is a well established game on Minis.

It's the special mineral oil that the filter is coated in that does the filtering and they will cope with an incredible amount of dirt without any reduction in performance - in normal usage a K&N could easily outlast your engine with no servicing. I've only had to clean one once as a consequence of an exhaust manifold leak. The technique is to roll it around in a shallow bath of solvent, petrol, so that the element only gets wet from the outside. you then rinse it thoroughly under a running tap from the inside out, let it dry and re oil it. I bet all this is explained on the K&N website better.

It's unlikely the filter is affecting your idle if the engine produces full power as normal (no reduction in top speed) - you could just remove the filter to see if the idle improves - but never drive a car without an air filter!

Shame you're not local, I have a bottle of k&N oil I'll never use up.

your filter is in the right place a cone would fit the same - converting back to the original factory set up could be expensive if you have to buy new parts.

Thanks a lot for that explanation Ethel!!

I had an exhaust manifold leak a couple of months back and my engine doesn't produce full power as normal  so umm...I don't know, apparently you can hear the air being sucked through the filter when he's being driven...

Could be the filter then, anyone you could borrow one off just to confirm it?
