Those are codes for earlier chassis numbers - for example XC2W2xxxxxx is a 1098cc Clubman Estate number xxxxxx. Not sure if the later VIN numbers use the same coding but there will be a specific code for them as well.

Ive noticed on a late cooper we have at work, the vin is riveted to the boot floor.

This maybe cause its a japanese import though, and with the extra air con under the bonnet, theres no room for the vin to be seen under there.

Yes - that's the one - the VIN number will start SAXX.... IIRC.

Paint & trim codes are at the top of the plate as well on these types.

JR

Edit: The VIN number should also be stamped in the scuttle panel rain channel at the back of the engine bay on this sort of age Mini.

If you want the one stamped into the body then it should be above the master cylinders in the rain channel just below the windscreen. It's not easy to find , best feel for it

No its not behind the sound deadening, open the bonnet and you will have like a u shape on the edge of the scuttle, its a rain channel, the number will be stamped in the bottom of the u shape.

very hard to explain lol

What if your scuttle panel has been replaced due to rust?

First of all, I apologise for piggy backing on this thread, but I have a similar/related issue. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out if you can

I am looking to buy a Mini pickup which the owner says and it is registered in Costa Rica as a 1975 (not much of a difference here, it could be any year).
I went to look for any identifying numbers and found the following series:

U/014xxxL Under the front lip of the bonnet, where it latches the body.

FE1979xx5 On the right side of the chassis next to the motor, right under the bonnet.

85HxxxPxxx19 on the engine (Someone on a different thread already shed some light to it being an 850cc and not a 1100cc as the Costarican registry shows)

I am suspicious of all three series since my search on the internet has turned nothing similar for any pickups '75 or otherwise. i suspect the engine is not an original pickup but belonged to some other Mini and was put in the pickup. As for the other numbers, I know U is for pickup, but as I understand it there should be several more letters on that series. and as for the FE, so far no search has come back with anything similar.

Does anyone at all have any idea if this is a legitimate '75 pickup, maybe not built in the UK or what these numbers mean or where they are from??

The FE number is the Front Assembly number and has little bearing on the date of manufacture of the car.
The FE number is a number originally used in the factory and doesn't seem to mean much in the outside world, FE = Front End I think.
The FE number was usually reversed stamped into a welded plate.
