the whole engine.

the block of an auto is different to a manual block so it isnt just a case of bolting on a new gearbox.

easiest way is to do a complete swap

The oil passage junctions with the box differ I believe.

possibly maybe, but after spending 3 times the time effort and money is it going to be worth it?!
you could pick up a nice low milage complete 1275 for £150 max.

You cannot interchange the blocks on manual and auto engines,.. neither can you interchange the gearboxes, the oil galleries are totally different and will not line up. engine go bang.

You can re-use the ancilleries (dizzy, radiator etc) and the head. That's it.

You'll also need to buy a new subframe or some Converison spacers from minisport.

No. You can't. sorry  You need to buy a 1275 short engine, block, crank and pistons, to go on your manual gearbox.

Well technically you can but it's not easy. Someone on here did it at home once but it isn't really worth the work involved and is very easy to get wrong. The bare castings of each block are from the same tool, it's the machining that's different. You need to drill some new oilways and plug some existing ones but that means you have to drill some really long/deep holes, very accurately through cast iron and end up with the hole coming out in the right place. As I said, that isn't easy.

In short, it's not easy. If you aren't an experienced engineer you will only mess it up so don't try. Just buy a new engine and let someone who might need an auto block use the one you have rather than destroy it.

There are 'some' 1275 auto's which can be changed, without too much hassle... I have one down the unit which has already been machined but the oil filter connection has been blanked off with a plate.... this suggests that by just blocking up the feed in the bottom of the block, and then putting on the filter housing... the conversion would be done...

I don't think there are any other oil way modifications required other than that...

I can't remember exactly what it was that the chap who did this before had to do to make it work but there was definitely some oil way drilling. I think you'll find that under that plate is where the two supply oil drillings that feed the main gallery have to meet as they are at different angles. There is some reason that it won't accept a standard filter head directly there but I can't remember what. Is there not also an extra drilling out of the oil pump housing for supplying the low pressure pump to deal with? Or was that only on early autos? I may go off and search for the thread now.

In any case it won't just fit directly onto a manual box.

so by the sounds of it you could build yourself a 1380 torquetastic monster for less cost and effort!
