I'm going for the 12c spray gun from machinemart for my 2hp compressor.Check out their website, it's only £20. I'm not sure whether to use it for the whole respray and then get or borrow a better gun for the final coat or use it for everythin but I'm sure the finish will be good enough for atleast primer.

It wont be doing any colour at all, its basicaly just to get primer on as it may have to be stored out side for a week or two.

If you only require it for applying primer, any old cheap gun would be fine, I had a £30 suction gun I used to use for primer, did a perfectly good job so long as you keep it clean. Oh and for primer don't use anything with a tip smaller than 1.4, as it won't flow as well as it should.

Isn't primer pourous? And thus would just hold water against the bodywork causing it to rust faster?

I might be wrong, but I'd rather bring it up and save you finding out the hard way.

I've been using a 1.4 tip in my gun for everything - should I get a 1.6 for primer ? is this why I'm having to thin it down more than feels necessary?

primer is hydroscopic(sp?) , meaning that it does indeed hold water molecules. The best thing is red oxide primer, then go for a dirty great plastic sheet over the top. get clothes pegs on it around all the seams or mole grips or bulldog clips, or better still, her hair clips!!!

dont let the sheet have water traps though or you will look a tit like me when you rip it off and you get soaked!!!

A 1.4 should be fine for primer, but a 1.6 would be even better and would require less thinning.
