Dog my back is so bad too for working on the Mini. I have to kneel down, I can't really lean/bend/hunch over for lengths of time.

It's always funny at when I'm taking photos, because most people bend down when taking a low angle shot but I can't so I have to lie on the floor and look up...

The best advice I can give you now, is to regularly take Glucosamine and Chondroitin capsules.

Agreed. :)

Things like Glucosamine and Cod Liver Oil are great for bones and joints. However, they're supplements and they're NOT medicines, so a) they won't say on the bottles/tubs what they can be used to 'treat' or 'aid' and b) they cannot be used on their own, otherwise they're not really beneficial.

Swimming is a great one as it takes pressure off your joints and keeps them moving at the same time.

Try not to eat too many carbohydrates, as these are inflammatory. So food such as potatoes, pasta, bread etc. Also, stay away from fatty foods and ready meals. Try to keep off caffeine and eat as much fresh fruit and veg as you can.

My joints are pretty shot in my left wrist and hand. I can't move it properly without something going 'BANG'. All thanks to me messing about on a climbing frame when i was little. I fell off, landed on my wrist and bent my hand back parallel with the rest of my arm... broke both bones. It then hasn't healed properly and is pretty knackered, to be honest!

i second the glucosamine... i work for a company which markets some glucosamine and most people seem to swear by the stuff!
all glucosamine is the same.. and the prices over the ranges vary so much.. its all the same stuff.
So dont go buying the really expensive stuff... it wont help you anymore :)

Which was caused by an accident a couple of years ago of involving “extreme spots” which caused damage to joint cartilage

THEM SPOTS MUST HAVE BEEN HUUUGE!

on a serious note however, I too suffer from what i consider to be arthiritic symptoms, although it may just be a lack of circulation to the extremities? im 21, and find that overall my hands and feet late at nigfht and early morning are very sore from cold and my fingers are very stiff, almost sore to move,

my back seems fine however, sorry to hear yours is so bad. I guess light exercise would help a bit?
im no physio however so wouldnt take what i say as gospel

Regarding drugs, it all depends on what type of arthritis you have. If the pain is quite severe go and get it checked out as the sooner some types of arthritis, such as Rheumatoid arthritis, are diagnosed the better the out look will be. Most of the injuries people have suffered on here may have caused earlier onset of osteo-arthritis, where the cartilage has been prematurely eroded from the bone making joints stiff and painful. This is normal with age but as said cod liver oil and other supplements will help ease the pain. Also keeping the joints mobile will help as well.

The best advice I can give is get to the doctors and get checked out, the earlier arthirtis can be "diagnosed" rather than people saying every ache is arthiritis, the better. In the mean time drugs such as Ibuprofen is good as it has anti-inflammatpry properties in it so will help alleviate the pain, it is also the first non-steroid anti-inflammotory drug the doctor will prescribe for rheumatoid arthritis. Paracetamol will do nothing apart from ease the pain for a few hours as it has no anti inflammotory properties.

Every time I check in to this thread it answers a question I was going to ask! Thanks to everyone.

I get glucosamine from a firm in the Channel Isles (it's free of VAT).

I have a feeling acidic fruit isn't helpful, so I prefer bananas (must be my family tree showing through) to oranges.

Most of my various aches and pains recede with exercise and warmth, then come back.

That Bean is wise.
Best plan is to sort out your diet, keep it well balanced & not bother with supplements. They are a scam.

I notice a huge difference when I haven't taken the Glucosamine & Chondroitin for a few months.... So does my Mum, who also has severe Rheumatoid arthritis. Luckily mine was diagnosed at a very early age, so we can usually keep it under control with the right drugs.

If your body can't absorb certain things from your diet, supplements are sometimes the only way to get them in there! :)

But the only way to tell if your doing the right thing is to see a specialist about it, as Paul said earlier... most people are probably suffering from aches and pains and not Arthritis at all, thank your lucky stars if this is the case as I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!!

OK, Maybe I oversimplified :) . Soz. For those who are otherwise healthy & have no gut problems, then you're wasting your money by buying supplements. Eat properly instead. :P

It's always funny at when I'm taking photos, because most people bend down when taking a low angle shot but I can't so I have to lie on the floor and look up...

Another one I tend to get is if I standing chatting to someone say down the pub, I then turn to walk off, but can’t as one of my knees has just locked solid, and then have to wait a while, while it un freezes again.

The best advice I can give is get to the doctors and get checked out, the earlier arthirtis can be "diagnosed" rather than people saying every ache is arthiritis, the better. Well the knee pain is defiantly an early form of arthritis, as I remember him saying that soon after it happened, although the pains in my fingers are probably just the normal aches and pains, probably hasn’t helped braking, slicing, crushing etc a few fingers over the years.

Although like people have said I will go and see my GP to get checked out properly =]

They are a scam.

Not these ones: Clicky >_<

They're the only company who have vitamins and minerals in a form called 'Food State'. Basically, this means that the form in which you take the supplements is the same form that you get them naturally in food. =]

But they're there to supplement, not to replace. So they won't work if your diet isn't balanced.

Clicky for glucosamine

Clicky for glucosamine

They're the ones we use too....

The link to the Glucosamine caps made me laugh Bean..... It says on the jar 'Vegetarian Capsules' then in the list is says 'Vegetarian- NO'.... Numpties =]

As for getting everything you need from your diet:

Best Natural Sources:
There are no edible sources of Glucosamine Sulphate - bound forms do occur in cartilage but in meat this is gristle and we tend not to eat it. Our Glucosamine is derived from the shells of shell fish from far Eastern waters.
