funny that, I had the same story!
brought my gray golf with no V5, applied for the log book, recieved a reply within a week (telling me I needed a VIC, but thats another story..). So hopefuly you wont have to wait too long, and can get straight down to a post office. they wont do anythung at all, think how many people all want their stuff, soon as possible.
Is There Any Way To Hurry The Dvla?
