Talk about spotting this at the last minute - last time I have a few days off to fix my Mini, lol!
Like Craig says, we're not adverse to constuctive criticism - anything that helps us to improve and deliver the goods is most welcome. We're still quite a new team in many respects and there's room for improvement in all of us.
We are very aware of the problem at the mag, and have taken steps to ensure these errors, within reason, become a thing of the past.
This is not an excuse by any means, but somethimes mistakes can slip through the net. Personally I have only written one buying guide - on the 1275 GT which I consider to be my expert feild. Even so, I wrongly said the voltage regulator on early cars is on the inner wing rather than the bulkhead. Trivial maybe, but still frustrating from my point of view.
As well as a buying guide, these features are intended as a keepsake on particular models and we want to ensure there's something for everyone. They're not just for special edition cars - if we could find a mint 79 City Auto, we'd cover it! As such, the information can be very difficult to source. In most cases the info is out there, but there's not always a club we can turn to for every model, and as has been rightly pointed out, there's a lot of conflicting information out there. For example, I once owned a mainstream Cooper with an oil cooler, sunfoof and half leather seats, none of which were standard features. The original owner swore it had never been modified too - it turns out these were RSP parts retro fitted by the dealer!
Mitigating circumstances aside, we'll do our best to make sure this doesn't happen again. In the meantime, if anyone knows of a good standard car we've yet to feature, get in touch.
Oh, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with being anal IMO!
Cheers

Jeff (Minimag)

Wow.. I seriously can't believe the attitude of some people in this thread!

Why, oh why, have people started slating him for correcting things that are wrong!? :dontgetit:

I thought people were interested in Minis!? :dontgetit: So why are people so willing to accept facts that are wrong and dismiss what's right!? :dontgetit:

Dunno about anyone else, but I admire Mr Anorak - I'm in awe of his knowledge :techsupport:

Keep it up Mr Anorak...! You're a legend! :-

EDIT: Oh, and my Mini 25 will be as near-as-dammit factory spec...! Standard minis are awesome! And if wanting something to be perfect is geeky then so be it!! >

Hmm, what´s the fuss about the special edition models anyway ?

I mean I don´t bother if an uncomfy seat is of one particular colour or the other - I just throw it out.

Nimbus grey trim ? Yuk! At least you you can prep the stuff for painting more easily.

80s decals ? If I want to write off my beloved car, I´d rather do it driving too fast.

RSP Cooper ? Oooooh ! My german mainstream model had a factory-fitted oil cooler, no logo on the inlet duct and clear glass.

I do apreciate though, that people like Anorak share their knowledge on here, be it anal or not.

I think we're all a bit anal in some ways as we're an absolute melting pot of information on Minis, be it to do with the tuning, restoration or fine details that make a certain model.

So there's nothing wrong with that at all and without us there would be no Mini scene.

Anorak, why didn't that article mention the rare four door version of the Mainstream do you think? The one with the 5 speed box, twin tanks, twin-cam engine, central locking, electric windows, double sunroof, twin CD autochangers, power steering, HUD, power mirrors and air conditioning? I think there were only sixty built and they had a full alcantara interior, lambswool carpets made by Aston Martin and came in six specially blended metallic pearlescent colours that no other car has ever been painted. With Recaro seats. And they had no reflection if you looked at them through a mirror so they got crashed into a lot. I know they existed, I've seen two and my mate had one.

Just to add to Dan's post, the 'Cooper Delux' he talks about didn't have twin CD autochangers, it had one CD autochanger and a MiniDisc player (how much would that get used now! :techsupport:), and I believe the 5 speed box wasn't fitted by Rover, but rather supplied by Jack Knight and fitted by John Cooper Garages.

Wow someone with some serious knowledge, I hope you raised these points with the mag as constructive criticism.

Personally I think the mags are a waste of paper, and resources, but that is just my honest opinion as they are full of the same old thing month in and out, hence why I stopped buying them 3 years ago

this topic is my constructive criticism and i actually dont agree that the mags are a waste of paper, i just get disappointed when they get it wrong.

and they dont always get it wrong, and they are only human, and i love them all, but some of these mistakes could be avoided with a bit of basic research

I've only really skipped through this whole thead, but I've read Anorak's (lengthy) original diatribe. I was having a very similar conversation at home last week with Mr Juju as he has just submitted his PhD thesis (sorry dear, Dr Mr Juju :techsupport: ). Reference publications (on whatever subject) are only as accurate as their sources and the amount of historical digging that the author or the editor can do.
When writing a supposedly factual piece, it is the norm to cite previous publications as references (substantiation of 'fact', if you like). However, these references will also cite previous publications, which will also cite previous publications, etc....
Now if there is an error at any point, then this is like to be repeated in subsequent publications which cite that reference (or indeed references that cite that reference) and it is an editorial nightmare. :- Now that computers are used, I imagine the situation is far worse with copy-&-pasting errors from article to article.
All publications are prone to reproducing errors in this manner and the history books are full of 'em, but you can only go so far back in the archives to check that your references are accurate and credible. If you find an error in previous publications, then what do you do about it? Dr Mr Juju is meticulous & checked ALL his sources as far back as he could. When I wrote my PhD thesis, I didn't bother going further back than a single "generation" of publications.
You can't expect an Editor to be able to check everything beyond his or her primary sources every time a piece is published. It is down to reviewers & readers alike to point out these oversights, and it really seems to be people like The Anorak who do bother to put pen to paper or finger to keyboard to right these wrongs, but it is invaluable that they do.*

*However dull & anal that makes them appear. :dontgetit:

I think Stuart has painted pretty much every Mini I've ever had. Top bloke! Do you mean this 25? Too good to break IMO.

He won't break I don't think - I reckon he'd be far happier to sell it complete but I haven't spoken to him for a while. IIRC there were no bumpers, but everything else was there. Would be an excellent project for someone. Needs sills and rear subby I think, but on top it's pretty good.

I support Anorak *Holds up hand-made banner*

I am grateful there is someone and several others we can ask if we've got any special edition questions (by the way my mini chelsea and others I have seen have rear opening windows).

I have a heavily modified special edition, but that was mostly how I found him and the way I love him. However I adore original minis and enjoy reading all the info there is on here on them so thank you :techsupport:

Oh and is there a possibility of having a special editions section purely for questions on decals and spec etc please?
