Lo,

Could someone please post up how to move the gear linkage and remote inside the car, ive got a vague idea on how to do it, but not intirely sure, and a word for word description would help alot!!

Cheers pictures too would be helpfull.

If its DIY then get two wobble thingys from a socket set (1/2 " drive ) to weld in at each end, this will sort the angles out for you.
Thats my two penneth. ( mine was home made and maybe not an ideal design ).

yeah thats what my vague idea is, i just wanted to know where exactly people cut holes etc, also, wont those uj's be covered in that chrome stuff.....which wont weld nicely ????

Socket set UJs are no use as they are not concentric. When used in a fixed application they excert a twisting force.

Get proper UJ joints!! There not cheap but do the job properly...

In other words you need the cross shaped pivot bit to be flat. Loads of cars have decent UJ's on their steering columns.

I reckon the longer the shaft between the UJ's, the better.

I was going to do it to my car, but in the end I really couldn't be bothered.

There are kits available from the likes of KAD, perhaps it's worth you having a look at their website to see what the kit is like?

They're what Keith Calver uses in his race Clubby. He has done an article about the car in this month's Mini mag and he recons that they are up to the job.

The only thing I would add is that you need to make sure your engine steadies are in top condition. Because the gear lever will be attached directly to the shell, any rocking movement of the engine will cause the gear lever to move or maybe in extreme cases, cause the car to jump out of gear.

What's the benefit with this exactly? I know it will lift the linkage out of the way, but i's in the transmission tunnel anyway, so surely it's only protectingit against big rocks and the like?

Means you can position the gear lever where ever you want in the car (generally further back if you have bucket seats further back). Also means if you keep the standard length gear lever you can have it higher up, which may suit some people (have it closer to the steering wheel), or you can cut the lever down, so that the gear knob is at the standard height, which will give you a smaller throw on the lever.

As you say, there is also the advantage of being able to get your exhaust right up inside the tunnel, and lower your car even more.

hi, i have almost finished making it, ive done it quite nicely i think, only thing is, i lock out the sideways motion of the uj, as in, it now only moves one way, only thing is, im now not sure weather this will work, as when the shaft twists its guna swing left and right...... so i guess im guna have to try and free it off again lol ...... correct ?
