i think i'll have a look at some of the miglia engine bays ;D

you'll be surprised, literally only a couple have electric pumps

You may well find that nearly ALL Miglia/ Seven racers now use electric pumps and NO thermostats

How are you going to be able to run two pumps in the same system? I suspect you'll find the mechanical pump will just cavitate if you try to force water past it from another pump while it is running and that will actually cause the engine to get hotter, not cooler. I think you're going to have to decide on one or the other.

Dan, you can fit an electric pump into the bottom hose, and while the electric pump is idling, the mechanical pump will do the work, then when the engine is switched off, the electric pump will then take over to reduce heat soak. The Davies Craig pumps also recon they can be used as booster pumps working with the mechanical pump, but i doubt you would ever get to a point that you would need to do this on the A series.

well i'm a member of the Mini7 club, and have been having a good nose around their engines, and all i saw were a couple that had the electric pumps.

well i'm a member of the Mini7 club,

Sorry to go totally O/T, but what does that mean? Do you join online and get discounts to go to the races and stickers etc.?

Anyway, I've seen a few fitted to cars at the shows. I've also seen some on the miglias and various other race/rally cars. IMO they're overkill for a LOT of road cars, but I think the advantages are the reduction in load on the engine at particular times (ie, when revving etc). I've been looking at kits today actually (not that I was thinking of fitting one, I was just browsing). Merlin motorsport sell Davies Craig ones (or Craig David, or whatever it is).

Interesting read this thread though ;D

That seems to be what mini13 is saying he will build but I think that from a purely mechanical standpoint you would only be able to do that where you could run the two pumps parallel to each other. I understand that when the pumps are switched off they can flow without having to idle over but with them both running I'm not sure if the mechanical pump will cope if the water flow is already higher than it can itself deliver. After all the larger pulley is used to prevent the pump causing itself to cavitate before the water flow is increased by an electric pump.

here's a photo from thruxton, and you can see the mecahnical pump is there underneath the pulley.

I'm sure there's an EWP in there somewhere!

Isn't there? That don't look normal anyway, does it?

Take impellor off pump, use it as an idler pulley, fit EWP, carry on racing! ;D

dan your right, mecanical pump spins at a certain speed, so even if you ran a leccy one at the same time it wouldnt increase flow, only distrupt it and make temperature higher. The only advantage would be turning it on when you stop your car... but... its not going to get any hotter when your stop it, it just means if you get out, go into tesco, and come back, your engines gonna have to start from cold again ;D

That doesn't mean it still has an impeller in it, a lot of people use the original water pump housing as a water inlet. I can't think why you'd still need to run pulleys on it if the pump guts is missing though unless it's something unique to the toothed belt system. I'd still be amazed if the mechanical pump impeller could cope properly with water being pushed past it at high speed because as I said above the pump is capable of overwhelming itself when the small pulley is used.
